Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch (WIOB) is part of Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation and has the mandated responsibility to operate, maintain and keep safe the provincially owned water infrastructure. The Branch is made up of multidisciplinary teams including Operation, Maintenance, Safety, Capital Replacement/Rehabilitation, Alberta Dam and Canal Safety, Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring and Land Management administration. WIOB is Province wide with office locations in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Calgary, Red Deer, Edmonton, Spruce Grove and Peace River as well as several field offices at major infrastructure like the St Mary Dam, Oldman River Dam and Dickson Dam.
Role
As the Team Lead, you will report to the Operations Infrastructure Manager (Peace Athabasca) and be responsible for overseeing and guiding a team focused on ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of provincially owned water management infrastructure in the Peace – Athabasca Area, within the Water Operation Infrastructure Branch (WOIB). You will also provide supervision and leadership to operations and maintenance staff assigned to the Peace Athabasca area which includes planning and implementing day to day operation and maintenance of projects, assigning work, coordinating staff, and monitoring staff performance.
As Team Lead you will be to ensure the proper functioning of all components of the water management systems in the Peace/Athabasca area, which include the South Heart Dams, Paddle River Dam, Hutch, Stoney Dams, and Paddle and Pembina Diking System. It will be essential to operate within the licensed requirements and prioritize public safety. This will involve activities like monitoring flow conditions in rivers, channels, and reservoirs, implementing operational plans, flood action plans, and emergency response plans.
Furthermore, you will actively establish partnerships and maintain contact with various groups within the branch, department, other departments, Local Authorities, and the public in the region. This collaborative approach will enable the effective operation and maintenance of the infrastructure. You will also play a leadership role in providing operational input and project management support for repairs, major rehabilitation capital works, dam safety assessments, and engineering investigations.
Additionally, you will take the lead in implementing the Workplace Health and Safety program for the team, ensuring a safe working environment.
Qualifications
Two (2) year technical diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Water Resources or in a closely related field plus seven (7) years experience in the operation, maintenance and inspection of water infrastructure (dams, canals and hydraulics structures).
Additional Requirements:
- Basic understanding of the principals of hydrology, hydraulic structures, geotechnical, soil mechanics, surface drainage, and erosion control.
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license or equivalent
Equivalencies may be considered – directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
- Equivalent related experience with other large civil infrastructure projects may be considered.
Assets:
- Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems, including motors, hoists, gear reducers, pumps, generators, cranes, Programmable Logic Controllers, Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and associated preventative maintenance programs.
- Experience with emergency management and flood management.
- Knowledge and experience with Project Management and Contract Administration.
- Familiarity with Alberta’s Water Act, and Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation, and Code.
- Standard First Aid, fall protection, and confined space entry certifications.
- Eligibility for membership with the Association Of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals Of Alberta (A.S.E.T.)
- Previous demonstrated experience with supervision of staff, and stakeholder collaboration.
Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.

Salary
$3,098.38 to $4,079.34 biweekly ($80,867 to $106,470 / year)
Notes
Position Information:
- Office located in Peace River or Spruce Grove
- Hours of Work: 40 hours per week (full time permanent position)
- Monday to Friday (08:00 am-17:00pm)
- Flexible start/end times are considered
- Evening and weekend work is sometimes required
- Participation in a 24/7 standby rotation is required
- Standby and overtime will be compensated in addition to advertised salary
- Travel:
- valid driver’s license is required for travel (Canada)
- significant travel and occasional overnight stays
