Functie­omschrijving

PBL is looking for a junior researcher to support the scenario development for the 7th Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution form a threat to sustainable human development. In this context, this upcoming report should provide a crucial assessment of the necessary transformations to address these environmental challenges, and the related socioeconomic implications. PBL coordinates the scenario analysis for GEO-7, which involves 10+ global modeling teams.

Your main tasks include facilitating cooperation between the different modeling teams and supporting the scenario development of PBL’s IMAGE Integrated Assessment Modelling team. Managing data exchange between the modelling teams and analyzing and reporting model output is a key part of this work.

Functie-eisen

  • you have a MSc in environmental science, system analysis, or related scientific discipline
  • you have experience with data management, version control and analysis, including with spatially explicit data. You also have experience with model development and application, including demonstrable programming skills, ideally in Python
  • you have strong technical and analytical skills, with the ability to learn new skills quickly and adapt
  • you can work independently as well as in a multidisciplinary research team

In addition to your salary, you will receive an Individual Budget (IKB). The IKB consists of funds (16.37% of your gross annual salary) and time. The Department of Climate, Air and Energy (KLE) analyses the effects of climate change, air pollution and energy issues on society. Looking at every scale — national, European and global — it carries out assessments of policies, both proposed and already in place, on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change, combat air pollution, and realize a sustainable energy supply. It also studies scientific, economic and governance aspects of societal developments. This work is often based on integral quantitative analyses using various calculation models and a systems approach.
