About WASH Institute:

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Institute (WASH Institute), established in 2008,is a non-profit organization, dedicated to providing practical solutions to tackle a wide range of water, sanitation, hygiene and environmental issues in India and the neighbouring countries. WASH Institute aims to build the capacities of the sector through programs that provide a) training and academic courses, b) technical advisory and consultancy services, and c) grass roots community WASH programs.

WASH Institute has been conducting extensive training programs for government functionaries, private sector professionals, NGOs, and other practitioners with the objective of effective WASH implementation across the country. In addition, our academic campus offers Diploma and Masters level courses in sanitation, under affiliation to a leading university.

As part of our WASH Advisory program, we provide PMU services to central, state, and local governments in both urban and rural areas to support implementation of SBM, JJM, and AMRUT schemes. Our community WASH programs are currently ongoing in 15 locations across 8 states and 1 Union Territory in India.

We are a multi-disciplinary team that tackle complex multi-faceted problems of behaviour change, quality of service, and sustainability of WASH interventions. We are looking for experienced professionals to work with us towards our visions of “a world where all the communities have access to safe, protected and sustainable drinking water and sanitation services, with improved hygiene practices”.

Mobile treatment unit
Through its research & development wing, WASH Institute has built a mobile treatment unit that treats faecal sludge from septic tank while desludging the containment system. The unit has been extensively field tested over 5 years now and its performance has been tested by International and Indian institutions. Mobile treatment unit is now ready to be commercially launched and scaling its outreach across India. In this regard, with the support from USAID Development Innovation Ventures, WASH Institute plans to test different business models for implementation of MTU and develop its scale up plan.

Position: WASH Technical Specialist
Number of vacancy: 1
Location: Flexible – preferably New Delhi or Dindigul, Tamil Nadu
Desired Qualification and Experience: Bachelors/Masters in Engineering with 3 to 5 years experience in WASH

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare technical specification of MTU
  • Liaise with licensing manufacturing partners of MTU and providing inputs on MTU specifications
  • Coordinate and support licensed MTU manufacturing partners in manufacturing of MTU
  • Coordinate with manufacturing firms on knowledge transfer of MTU and production and sales of MTU
  • Coordinate with local governments in creating awareness on MTU and supporting government with the required documentation
  • Assisting WASH Institute government liaison officer and state technical coordinators with preparation of specification as per state tender requirements
  • Assisting MTU training and capacity building team in undertaking training on technical aspects of the MTU to state & local government officials and MTU operators
  • Periodic update to the MTU program manager on the progress
  • Assistance provided to other MTU team members and show casing MTU’s work through various social media channels
  • Developing agency brief for hiring consultants/ agencies as required
  • Organize Workshops and conferences for dissemination of MTU business models and lessons from commercializing of MTU.

Preferred Qualification and Experience :

  • Post Graduate degree or bachelors’ in engineering; preferably in mechanical, civil or chemical engineering
  • Work experience of 3 to 5 years in WASH sector and having an understanding of engineering design is critical
  • Good writing skills
  • Understanding of water and sanitation theme and issues is desirable and must have strong interest to work in the sector
  • Fluency in English and Hindi is essential
