WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

Reporting to the Water Policy Team Lead on the North America Policy and Government Relations Team (NAPGR), the Water Policy Advisor develops, coordinates, and implements strategies to further the work of TNC and its conservation partners through direct interaction with federal agencies, lawmakers, and other stakeholders to advance our federal freshwater, marine, and/or climate adaptation policy. . They serve as an external representative on US freshwater, marine, and/or climate adaptation policy, and conducts relevant outreach and fosters relationships to support TNC’s goals and priorities. They will collaborate with TNC’s policy, conservation, and science staff and the NAPGR team to identify policy opportunities, evaluate the potential for strategic partnerships, and develop and implement strategies to influence public policy.

 
Responsibilities and Scope
•    Apply a range of analytical skills to assess current and emerging policy opportunities.
•    Cultivate a broad set of relationships with federal agency staff and leadership and advocate for TNC freshwater, marine, and/or climate adaptation policy.
•    Meet with members of Congress and staff as needed to advocate for TNC freshwater, marine, and climate adaptation policy.
•    Advocate for public funding for the protection, conservation, sustainable management, and restoration, of freshwater and/or marine areas.
•    Develops written analytical products and other deliverables to support policy and program objectives, for internal and external audiences.
•    Acts independently within broad program goals.
•    Support program objectives by working in a complex matrix organization environment and works collaboratively within a cross-functional interdisciplinary team.
•    Communicates professionally with a wide variety of people from different cultures.
•    Accountable to persuasively convey the mission and policy positions of TNC to diverse groups including key legislators, government officials, and others who are critical to TNC’s overall public policy strategies.
•    Works in partnership with other organizations in a collaborative and consultative or advisory capacity.
•    Ensures compliance with internal policy and external requirements, including federal lobbying laws and regulations.
•    Supports fundraising activities as needed.
•    Develops constructive and effective working relationships inside and outside TNC.
•    May supervise administrative and/or professional staff.

The location for this position is negotiable within the United States, with a preference for the DC Metro area.
 

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

•    Bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental policy, management or other relevant field and 5 years of government relations or corporate sector experience, or equivalent combination education/experience.  
•    Fluency in English 
•    Analytical and project management experience. Experience in successfully developing and implementing complex projects in an unstructured environment. 
•    Experience developing, directing, and managing multiple projects and implementing strategic program goals.
•    Experience with communication and presentations.
•    Experience with negotiation skills.
