The Policy Division is responsible for the overall integration of Environment and Protected Areas’ policy agenda and legislative, cabinet and policy systems coordination. This includes a lead role in air, climate, water and waste policy, as well as a strategic coordinating role in lands, fish and wildlife policy. The Policy Division is instrumental in advancing efforts to modernize the department’s legislation and associated regulations, reduce red tape and provide the necessary policy framework to achieve operational excellence.
Role
As a Water Policy Advisor within the Water and Waste Policy Branch, the incumbent will function and participate as a key member of an integrated team of professionals and technical staff responsible for the development of robust and integrated water policy across the Government of Alberta.
The incumbent will be responsible for advanced water policy development and analysis to support the development of robust and integrated water policy across the Government of Alberta.
Responsibilities will include:
- Conducting policy research to inform the design and implementation of policies that support the department’s goals
- Developing recommendations and options to identify course of actions and implications for water policies
- Aiding in the facilitation of multi-stakeholder committees, workshops and initiatives that provide opportunities for public and stakeholder input into departmental activities
- Coordinating the development of integrated policy across several ministries, the Alberta Energy Regulator and other agencies
- Consulting and collaborating with regional and operational staff to develop policy options and implementation activities
- Developing key messages, briefings and summaries related to Minister/DM/ADM requests, news reports and release of major research studies written in clear succinct language without technical jargon
Qualifications
Requirements:
- University graduation in a related field such as political science, environmental science, public policy or another related field
- 2 years of progressively responsible experience in areas such as water policy analysis and development
Equivalencies: Directly related education or experience considered based on:
- One year of experience for one year of education (e.g., Diploma plus 4 years’ experience) or
- One year of education for one year of experience (e.g., Masters degree plus 1 year of experience)
Assets:
- Proficiency in computer usage including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, presentation software along with Alberta Environment and Protected Areas Oil Sands Information Portal
- Excellent data analysis and interpretation skills along with oral and written communication skills, to enable effective communication with specialists and non-specialists including stakeholders, First Nations, Metis communities, other GoA Departments and members of the public.
- Experience developing and writing decision and information documents (i.e., briefing notes)
- Knowledge of relevant provincial and federal acts, regulations, policies and procedures
- Alberta’s relevant legislation, regulation and polices include: Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, Water Act, Alberta Land Stewardship Act, Oil Sands Conservation Act, Lower Athabasca Regional Plan, Lower Athabasca Region: Tailings Management Framework for the Mineable Athabasca Oil Sands, Alberta Wetland Policy, Water Conservation Policy

Salary
$2,588.06 to $3,397.76 bi-weekly ($67,548 – $88,681/year).

Monday to Friday: 36.25 hours per week (8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.)
Temporary position for approximately 12 months

This position works out of Oxbridge Place (9820 – 106 Street) in Edmonton, Alberta.
