About the role

This is an exciting job share fixed term part time opportunity where you will lead and coordinate a group of enthusiastic scientists across a variety of disciplines in a supportive team environment. You will plan, oversee, and deliver high quality laboratory and field work for marine and recreational water quality monitoring, assessment and reporting across the state of Victoria. In addition, you will develop and maintain protocols and standard operating procedures for water monitoring operations, aligned to EPA’s strategic priorities, to prevent harm to Victorian communities and the environment from pollution and waste.

Working under broad direction from Manager, Water Sciences, you will lead and manage a team through change, ensuring a positive organisational culture and that the highest standards of performance and integrity are achieved; and fostering genuine partnerships across all levels of government, industry, and community to deliver organisational outcomes. The position will involve fieldwork and travel to sites across the state. You will possess a current Victorian driver’s licence and there may be a potential requirement for overnight stay in regional Victoria.

Duties

  • Coordinate and lead a team to achieve best practice in sample storage and water science laboratory management.
  • Oversee and deliver water quality monitoring, assessment and reporting across Victoria.
  • Drive continuous improvement in EPA’s water monitoring operations and services and identify and assess new and emerging technologies to enhance EPA’s water monitoring capability.

Skills and experience

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and the ability to manage and work in different environments, including outdoors, on boats and in a laboratory.
  • Tertiary degree and/or post graduate qualifications in a relevant scientific discipline, such as Marine or Freshwater Science, or Environmental Chemistry (desirable).
  • Good communications skills with demonstrated ability to build relationships to achieve outcomes.
  • Demonstrated understanding of financial, budget and contract management processes.
  • A broad understanding of environmental regulation as it relates to pollution and waste is desirable.
  • Actively lead the development of a positive high performing team culture; committed to safe work practices and continuous improvement.
