 Job Summary

The Oleksy lab at the University of Colorado Boulder is seeking a Professional Research Assistant to provide support for alpine lake research projects in the field and in the lab. The research assistant will be located in or near Boulder, CO, and will work under the supervision Dr. Isabella Oleksy. The Research Assistant will initially receive frequent supervision but will be expected to develop independence over time in planning and performing laboratory and field work that are standard to the Oleksy lab. Applicants who have previously demonstrated self-motivation and passion for research will receive special consideration. Appointment is initially for 1 year, with possibility for extension depending on job performance and funding availability. The position will begin September 2023, but exact start date is negotiable. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The Research Assistant will coordinate and implement tasks associated with field research in alpine lakes and laboratory research with field-collected samples. Specific responsibilities:

  • Researching prices and ordering lab supplies with the overarching goal of assisting in the assembly of a new biogeochemistry space within a shared, interdisciplinary laboratory in the Institute for Arctic and Alpine Research.
  • Ensuring lab safety compliance, proper waste management, and good record keepingUpdating and making accessible standard operating protocols for laboratory analyses and field work.
  • Training and supervising undergraduate and graduate students in lab and field protocols. Carrying a heavy pack 5-10 miles to sample remote mountain lakes in Colorado and Wyoming with one or two field assistants.
  • Basic processing of field samples in the lab (e.g., filtering and preserving water samples, quantifying algal pigment concentrations, analyzing water chemistry, preparing samples for shipment to other laboratories).
  • Developing, installing, and maintaining aquatic sensor networks and associated data streams in alpine watersheds.

 What We Can Offer

The annual compensation range for this position is $40,000 – $45,000, depending on experience. A relocation reimbursement will also be awarded, if applicable.  Benefits

What We Require

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in environment science, ecology, biology, chemistry, geology, or related fields.
  • Previous independent research experience preferred.
  • 2-3 years specialized experience in related field.
  • Experience conducting field work in all weather conditions required.
  • Valid driver’s license required. 

 What You Will Need

  • Highly motivated, ability to multitask, good organizational abilities, and ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Experience in the field of freshwater ecology or limnology preferred.
  • Management of teams and organizational experience in any setting is preferred.
