Conservation Hydrology Intern
20-40 hours/week
Position summary:
The Conservation Hydrology Intern is a seasonal, part-time position that will work primarily with Trout Unlimited (TU) TU’s Conservation Hydrology program based out of Emeryville, California. The Conservation Hydrology Intern will work as a member of an inter-disciplinary team to provide scientific support to various partner-based and process-based approaches to restore streamflow and habitat in CA’s coastal and Sierra headwater streams.
The Conservation Hydrology Intern is a field-based position, and the ideal candidate will love spending time outdoors collecting data. The Conservation Hydrology Intern will conduct frequent field streamflow monitoring trips and assist with data entry, field equipment maintenance, landowner outreach, and various other tasks. The Conservation Hydrology Intern will do a large amount of field-based work, as well as frequent travel to locations in Sonoma County, Mendocino County and elsewhere in northern, central, and eastern California. This position will require heavy amounts of driving and multi-day trips to remote areas.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Conduct frequent day-long site visits to measure streamflow and groundwater.
- Conduct monthly multi-day trips to remote areas, to measure streamflow and groundwater.
- Conduct or lead wet/dry mapping and stream channel surveys.
- Conduct occasional snorkel surveys.
- Photo document site conditions.
- Maintain rigorous data collection and assessment protocols.
- Assist with the installation of gages or other streamflow monitoring equipment.
- Assist with repairs and/or the replacement of parts at field sites as necessary.
- Update databases with new field data after completing monitoring trips.
- Help maintain equipment and report maintenance, or other equipment needs to the Conservation Hydrology team.
- Communicate with landowners.
Requirements
- Passion for the environmental field.
- Love for spending time outdoors.
- Ability to work long days in strenuous outdoor conditions, including but not limited to:
- Long field days that may be unexpected due to changes that occur in the field.
- Consecutive field days that may require you to stay overnight for multiple days.
- Ability to hike and transport heavy objects and equipment through rough terrain.
- Ability to travel long distances frequently.
- Ability to drive to remote locations, valid driver’s license is required. TU staff and interns may need to drive their personal cars to field sites and are reimbursed for gas based on the state’s mileage rate.
Work Location
This position is based out of TU’s Emeryville office but is mainly fieldwork in remote areas of Sonoma, Mendocino, San Mateo, and Santa Cruz counties. Frequent travel is required for attendance at meetings, project site visits, and field work. Field work can involve light to moderate physical demands and working outdoors under various conditions for long hours.

Salary Description
