Overview
The Watershed Management Division, Rivers Program is looking for an individual to lead and supervise the Science, Restoration, and Mapping Section. The Rivers Program is responsible for protecting and restoring natural river and floodplain processes to enhance water quality, ecological health, and flood resilience. The position provides day-to-day leadership of the regional river scientists and mapping specialist to coordinate Stream Geomorphic Assessments; River Corridor mapping and regulatory support; and river and floodplain restoration and conservation projects. The position manages projects and block grants administered by Clean Water Initiative Program and leads the River & Roads Training Program.
The position also serves as regional river scientist for an assigned region and requires a high level of technical, specialized skills in the field of fluvial geomorphology and the ability to oversee all aspects of contractual Stream Geomorphic Assessments (SGA) and quality assuring collected data. In addition, the position is responsible for conducting fieldwork to field verify the Statewide River Corridor Map in a regulatory context and applying SGA data to update and maintain the Statewide River Corridor Map in the assigned region.
The incumbent of this position must be able to represent the Rivers Program in public meetings, write and verbally communicate well with all interested or affected parties, and work well with the public and is expected to educate individuals during routine interactions. The official workstation will allow for telework and be headquartered in Essex, Vermont, and will require travel within the assigned geographic region.
Technical Skills
The ideal candidate:
– Has a comprehensive understanding of applied fluvial geomorphology and advanced understanding of the State’s Stream Geomorphic Assessment Protocols and field data collection methods;
– Has experience with the design and implementation of myriad river and floodplain restoration projects;
– Is highly proficient in the application of ESRI ArcGIS mapping software;
– Is able to read and understand relatively complex engineering design plans in support of regulatory and restoration work;
– Is highly proficient in the review and application of river corridor regulations through local and state authorities.

Environmental Factors
Duties are largely performed in an office setting; however, some field travel may be necessary for which private means of transportation must be available. Field work may involve exposure to chemicals, gases, hazardous liquid and solid waste, and construction sites during all weather conditions; and may involve traversing rough terrain and bodies of water. Some work outside of regular working hours, including attendance at public meetings, may be required. Strong differences of opinion may be encountered on a regular basis.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field AND four (4) or more years of experience in a natural resources field.
OR
Master’s degree or higher in a biological-life or physical science, engineering, a social science, data science, or an environmental or natural resources field AND three (3) or more years of experience in a natural resources field.
OR
Seven (7) years or more of experience in an engineering, environmental, social science, data science, or natural resources field.
