Junior Environmental Field Technician
June 26th-September 4th (8 weeks)
The Elk River Alliance (ERA) for a Junior Field Technician with a passion for the Elk River Watershed, environmental science, and education!
This entry level position would suit a dynamic and enthusiastic recent grad looking for hands on experience in field based environmental projects and programs. Work will focus on water monitoring, fieldwork, and restoration and enhancement work, but may also include community outreach (local events, markets, kiosks, etc.). The successful applicant will be adaptable and comfortable learning new skills. The position will require a flexible workweek, including weekends, with the potential for early mornings and/or evenings.
Student status is NOT required for this position. However, applicants must be aged 30 years or under at the start of employment, with Canadian citizenship, permanent residency or refugee status.
Location: Fernie, BC
Term: Fulltime, seasonal
Start-End Dates: June 26th-September 4th (8 weeks) – Flexible start/end dates
Pay Rate: $20.00 /hr
Schedule: 40 hr/week, weekends required

Responsibilities:
The successful applicant will work as an Environmental Technician, under the supervision of the Elk River Alliance’s Ecologist and Field Technician. The applicant will participate in fieldwork initiatives, which include (but aren’t limited to):
- Water quality monitoring (CABIN work and ad-hoc sampling).
- Hydrometric monitoring (hydrometric station and temperature pendant installations, station maintenance, and collecting water level and discharge data).
- Restoration work with a focus on habitat rehabilitation, site inspections, fencing installations, planting efforts, supervising volunteers, and assisting in stewardship and research activities.
- Data entry, with opportunities to assist in mapping, data analysis and reporting.
- Equipment calibration and maintenance.
- Engage with the community as an Elk River Alliance representative at local events, markets and workshops.
Requirements
- 18 to 30 years of age at the start of employment (Student status is NOT required)
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or hold refugee status.
- Clean criminal record (police background check required prior to employment)
- Class 4 or 5 driver’s license and reliable personal vehicle
- Must be comfortable in and around water
- Must have an interest in environmental science and the Elk River ecosystem
- Strong work ethic, able to take initiative and work independently and in a team environment
- Comfortable with physically demanding fieldwork (digging, carrying equipment, off-trail hiking, stream crossings, equipment installation, use of power tools, etc.) in adverse weather conditions
- Background in environmental science and/or an outdoor field
The following skills and qualifications considered an asset
- Strong communication skills (written, oral)
- Education and outreach experience
- Knowledge and/or experience in hydrometrics, water quality monitoring, or restoration work
- Freshwater fisheries, fish or fish habitat experience
- Swiftwater/lifeguard training an asset
- Current first aid certification an asset
- Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
