The International Hydropower Association (IHA) is recruiting an intern to support the delivery of strategic communications and advocacy campaigns for the global sustainable hydropower sector with a key focus this year on supporting the delivery of our flagship event: the World Hydropower Congress in Bali in October.
IHA is the voice for sustainable hydropower, with more than 100 members including developers, operators and manufacturers worldwide. It works with industry, governments, civil society, multilateral institutions and the financial community. Its Board comprises influential industry representatives, a former head of government and a leading former United Nations diplomat.
We believe that internships serve an important social function in giving promising individuals an opportunity to get relevant and motivating, hands-on working experience.
About the role
- Remuneration: £23,302.50 – 25,000 based on experience + benefits (pro-rata)
- Hours per week: 37.5 (Monday to Friday)/ part time considered
- Contract: 6 months (June-Nov 2023) with opportunity for extension
- Location: Hybrid. At least two days per week at IHA’s offices at Canary Wharf, London

Key responsibilities
You will report to a senior communications officer and support the team in the delivery of a communications and advocacy strategy to ensure that hydropower’s role is recognised in the clean energy transition with policymakers, financial institutions, the wider energy sector and the public, and that principles of sustainable hydropower are well understood and adopted across the sector.
You will support the delivery of the promotional plan for the World Hydropower Congress in Bali in October this year, alongside communications covering our key themes and regions.
Delivery will cover the full communications mix:
- Supporting the promotion of events/webinars.
- Developing high-quality written content for IHA’s communications channels, including websites, publications, emails, social media, and events.
- Writing features and op-ed articles for external websites and publications as required.
- Helping with media management, including drafting media releases and developing target media lists.
- Supporting the delivery of flagship publications, including the World Hydropower Outlook and IHA Annual Report.
- Contributing to the measurement, evaluation and ongoing improvement of communications and advocacy activities to include website/MailChimp/social media analytics.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Strong writing ability and demonstrable experience of explaining complex technical ideas in a compelling and accessible way.
- Experience in using social media for another organisation or initiative (WeChat would be an advantage).
- An interest and/or experience in renewable energy or climate change, and a proven ability to interpret technical concepts and data.
Desired
- Skills in some areas of desktop publishing and design software, such as Adobe InDesign, or video editing.
- Experience in website management, we use Webflow and WordPress at IHA.
- A second language would be an advantage.
