Job Description and Duties

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife – Water Branch has an opportunity to work in a fast paced environment on some of the State’s highest profile environmental and water infrastructure projects. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Water Branch team in a position that provides the opportunity for rapid professional growth and the development of expertise in: applied fisheries science and management; data analysis and synthesis; scientific writing; and environmental regulation, law, permitting, and permit implementation.

Under direction of a Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), this position is responsible for conducting complex and detailed analysis, synthesis, and modeling that combine data from numerous long-term and drought related studies. This position is responsible for deriving critically needed information for drought planning and management of the State and Federal Water Projects, and informing drought planning and management of the San Francisco Bay Delta Estuary. This is accomplished by analyzing interrelationships to find the mechanisms that drive fishery and ecosystem responses during drought related changes in water operations or other drivers and to develop applied science recommendations for improvement.

This position is advertised as a Limited Term for 12 months and can be extended to 24 months. This position may become permanent.

Working Conditions

Ability to use a computer keyboard several hours a day. Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Attend meetings and hearings, work with staff statewide to complete work assignments. Occasional travel may be required including visiting field studies with rough terrain and wet slippery aquatic environments with extremes of heat and cold.

This position is a hybrid remote/office, and the incumbent is expected to work in the West Sacramento office 6 days per month.

Knowledge of: Effects of biotic and abiotic interactions on the environment; all aspects of data science and data generation, management, quality control, storage, synthesis, analysis, visualization, archiving, and sharing; (familiarity with) coding in R, Python, etc. on various software platforms; understanding of advanced data analysis methods including machine learning, deep learning, and time series analysis.

Ability to: Learn to evaluate outputs from species life cycle models and hydraulic and hydrodynamic water simulation models such as CALSIM2, DSM2, and particle tracking models, Perform various complex tasks related to fisheries management and conservation principles, state and federal environmental regulations, and operations of the state and federal water projects. Synthesize diverse, multi-disciplinary, disparate datasets, provide constructive comments, develop recommendations for improvement in water operations.

Special Experience: Fisheries work in multivariate analysis, statistics, numeric and conceptual modeling, advanced spatial analysis, and trophic level analysis is desirable.

Special Personal Characteristics: Detail oriented with a demonstrated ability to act independently, open-mindedness, flexibility, curiosity, creativity, and tact.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work in a team setting and maintain good working relationships.
