Miami Waterkeeper (MWK) is an award-winning non-profit organization dedicated to protecting Biscayne Bay and the surrounding watershed. Launched in 2010, MWK has become a leading advocate for clean water, inspiring a movement of empowered citizens dedicated to achieving swimmable, drinkable, fishable water. Addressing issues on multiple fronts, we use community outreach, scientific research, and civic and legal action to advance our mission. Miami Waterkeeper is seeking a dynamic individual with executive, supervisory, and strategic experience to serve as Chief Operating Officer. The COO will oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization and support the Executive Director in implementing strategic initiatives and achieving organizational goals. An ideal candidate for this role will have a deep passion for our mission and will be a highly-skilled, detail-oriented, team leader who is independent, exceptionally organized, and self-motivated. Every COO role is a little bit different. This one will focus heavily on finance, compliance, strategy, and human resources. The COO will coordinate projects and operations across the organization and will also have direct supervisees. 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with Executive Director in setting and driving organizational vision, operations strategy, and hiring levels
  • Translate strategy into actionable steps for growth, implementing organization-wide goal setting, performance management, and annual operations planning
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to develop and implement organizational strategies, policies, and procedures
  • Oversee and manage the organization’s budget, financial operations, and grant compliance
  • Ensure effective recruiting, onboarding, professional development, performance management, culture building, and retention
  • Ensure compliance with national and local business regulations, and take appropriate action when necessary
  • Assess and mitigate significant competitive, regulatory, and financial risks to the organization
  • Design and implement HR policies 
  • Manage the organization’s administrative functions, including HR, IT, facilities, financial, and legal compliance
  • Implement business strategies and plans that align with the short- and long-term objectives developed in tandem with Executive Director and leadership team
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of organizational programs and operations and make recommendations for improvements

ADDITIONAL  RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Build a highly inclusive culture that ensures team members can thrive and that organizational goals are met
  • Design and implement processes and procedures to improve team efficiency
  • Communicate and manage with external partners and board committees

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years in executive leadership roles, non-profit experience is preferable but not required
  • 5+ years of budget management experience
  • 5+ years of project management experience
  • 5+ years of strategic non-profit management experience
  • High emotional intelligence, sense of urgency, and flexibility
  • High attention to detail
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Strong leadership skills and exceptional integrity
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategic plans and achieving organizational goals
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with stakeholders at all levels
  • Knowledge of the South Florida watershed and environmental issues is a plus
  • Experience fostering a diverse and inclusive team and culture both internally and externally 

SALARY RANGE

$110,000-130,000
