We are seeking for a highly motivated and ambitious Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the in the Department of Environmental and Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Science, Forestry and Technology, on the Joensuu campus.

Micro-organisms are integral in the biogeochemistry of elements in ecosystems. The aim of this project is to increase our understanding on the microbe-mediated biogeochemical processes that affect the environmental fate of elements in Finnish lake ecosystems and to investigate the potential impact of such processes on climate change, as well as to investigate how climate change alter these processes. As our new Postdoctoral Researcher, your studies can include, for example, research on microbes involved in reduction of sulphate to sulphide, or quantitative and qualitative analyses of reduction and oxidation processes of sulphur in lakes. Studies can also include research on the interactions of sulphate and heavy metals in the aquatic ecosystems and/or microbe-mediated speciation of mercury in humic lake systems.

In this position you will co-operate with the other researchers working in the research group, reflecting that work to the modelling approaches to be developed for water management purposes. UEF Water research program

The position will be filled for a fixed term, from 1 June 2023 (or starting date as agreed) for two years, due to it pertaining to tasks connected to UEF water research development. A probationary period is applied to all new members of the staff.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of the Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job requirement component and a personal performance component. In this position, the job requirement component is 3,044.00 €/month, based on level 5 of the job requirement chart for teaching and research staff. The personal performance component ranges from a minimum of 6% to a maximum of 50% of the above-mentioned sum. Depending on the personal performance component, the salary will be approximately €3534–3717 per month at the beginning of the employment.

  • the person to be appointed as Postdoctoral Researcher is required to hold a doctoral degree from an applicable field, which may not have been completed more than five years ago (dated 1st of June 2018 or later) at the time of accepting the position (a net period of time, which does not include parental leaves, military service etc.).The degree has to be completed by the end of the application period.
  • good command of the English language is required.
