Job description

Devon, Cornwall and Isles of Scilly face the most challenging year ever in protecting our local water resources. To achieve our area local ambition to protect water resources, influence corporate responsibility and regulate water use, we are recruiting temporary roles in recognition of the additional workload that drought poses on area staff.
In response to the ongoing drought, an exciting 12 month opportunity exists to represent ‘Land and Water’ via technical and regulatory input working alongside our virtual area drought permitting teams. Virtual teams from across the business are reviewing the solutions to safeguard drinking water resources put forward by South West Water in the form of permit applications and variations. The Water Resources Senior Environment Officer (SEO) role will consider the impacts on our local water environment and establish how we regulate that impact via permitting and compliance.
We anticipate the submission of a large programme of new permits and permit variations over 2023. With reservoir levels remaining low into this year, drought will remain a key priority for Land and Water teams. This SEO will :
•Represent Land and Water interests as a member of the drought virtual permitting team (including desalination solutions)
•Co-ordinate the regulation of drought permits
•Keep Land and Water teams up to date with local drought issues
•Technical lead for drought issues in the area providing training and support (including we time record and recharge) for Environment Officers
•Liaise with IEP on data submissions coming in from South West Water and assess compliance and associated enforcement
•Form part of the Water Land and Biodiversity (WLB) leadership community to plan work programmes and agree priority setting
•Liaise with permit holders on the water resources issue considering future impacts of climate change.
•Collate and contribute to our KPI data for Water Resources regulation work

The team

You will join of one of our 3 Land and Water Teams (depending on location), as with the other SEOs in WLB you will lead on your area of expertise across the whole of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Experience/skills required

• Knowledge and experience of regulating water resources permits
• Consider new efficient ways of working
• Effectively communicate
• Work collaboratively internally and externally
• Build and maintain productive relations with other teams in our response to drought
