The Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill an Underground Storage Tanks Unit Supervisor (WMS Band 1) position. This position is located in our Northwest Region Office (NWRO) in Shoreline, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
Please Note: The salary posted above includes the additional 5% premium pay that this position will receive due to this position’s location in King County.

As Unit Supervisor for nine amazing professional staff in one of four units, you will be a member of the Northwest Region Office (NWRO) section leadership team, reporting to the Section Manager. You will have a wide range of opportunities by leading staff in providing regulatory oversight to ensure that regulated underground storage tank (UST) facilities comply with the Underground Storage Tank Rule, Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA) and other environmental laws, regulations, and policies. In this critical role, you will help ensure USTs located within the Northwest Region of Washington, and their associated piping systems, are installed, managed, and monitored to prevent releases into the environment.
The mission of the Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) is to protect Washington’s human health and the environment by preventing and cleaning up pollution and supporting sustainable communities and natural resources for the benefit of future and current generations.
Tele-work options for this position: This position will be eligible for up to a 90% tele-work schedule. Accidental spills of dangerous materials and past business practices have contaminated land and water throughout the state. The Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) works to remedy these situations, which range from cleaning up contamination from leaking underground storage tanks, to large, complex projects requiring engineering solutions.
What you will do as the Underground Storage Tanks (UST) Unit Supervisor:
-Ensure the fair and consistent implementation of the UST regulations by supporting and directing staff in the inspection, management and enforcement of underground storage tank facilities within the region.
-Manage and oversee the investigation of underground storage tank management systems and conduct initial investigations for compliance with the Model Toxics -Control Act (MTCA) and other relevant laws and regulations.
-Oversee the installation, closure or operation of regulated UST facilities for compliance with the UST rule, MTCA, and other relevant laws and regulations.
-Track and follow-up to ensure staff is meeting time requirements of enforcements.
-Negotiate Agreed Orders and Consent Decrees with owners or operators of properties to implement site cleanups.
-Provide leadership and assistance with hiring, training and mentoring staff.
-Evaluate staff performance of work responsibilities, and review staff work for technical accuracy and consistency with agency regulations, policies, and guidance.

A total of nine years of experience and/or education as described below:
Professional Experience: in environmental analysis or control, or environmental planning, which includes one year of experience as a supervisor or team lead.
Experience may include some or all of the following:
Environmental analysis or control
Environmental data analysis and management
Supervising and leading a team of professional technical staff in addressing environmental concerns
Conducting remedial investigations and preparing remedial investigation reports
Education: involving major study in an environmental, physical, or natural science, engineering, planning, or closely allied field.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
Completion of initial 40-hour hazardous materials training (to be completed after hiring), followed by annual 8-hour refresher training.
