What can you expect as probabilistic engineer? 

As a junior probabilistic engineer you are mainly working on flood safety issues in the Netherlands. You will be responsible for quantifying failure probabilities of flood defenses, prioritizing knowledge and innovations and quantifying their impact.  

Clients include: Rijkswaterstaat, Water Boards and the High Water Protection Program (HWBP). They ask you what knowledge and innovations can be used and how they help with their challanges around improving coastal and river works such as dikes, dunes, storm surge barriers and breakwaters. 

Main tasks are:  

  • Quantifying the impact of innovations on the failure probability of flood defenses. Examples include innovations concerning grass or stone revetment of a dike, the modeling of (wave) loading or the effect of uncertainties;
  • Interpreting the failure probabilities and communicating this in reports and presentations to partners, customers and stakeholders; 
  • Performing calculations with the Probabilistic Toolkit software made by Deltares;  
  • In addition to your probabilistic activities, you will also perform other substantive work, particularly on subjects within the fields of ‘dike revetments’, ‘nearshore waves’ and ‘coastal structures’. This can take many forms such as physical model research, desk study and with numerical model calculations;
  • Contributing to tenders and research proposals.

What we ask of a probabilistic engineer:  

You are curious about flood safety and the bigger picture in the Dutch water system. Plus you are willing to develop yourself further in this field. In addition, we ask: 

  • A MSc degree in Hydraulic Engineering or similar, with experience in probability theory and probabilistics; 
  • Basic skills in scripting languages, preferably Python and/or Matlab; 
  • You enjoy getting to the bottom of complex systems; 
  • You speak and write English fluently and preferably also Dutch.
