Position HighlightsThe School of Natural Resources and the Environment (SNRE) at The University Arizona, is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative individual for the position of Career Track Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in GIS and remote sensing. This is a 9-month (academic) teaching position (1.0 FTE) at the Assistant or Associate rank. The position requires teaching online and in person courses in the fall and spring semesters (90%) and service-related duties (10%). This position is not tenure eligible. Anticipated start date is August 21, 2023.The expected teaching load is approximately six courses or 18 units per year on the main campus of the University of Arizona. Course assignments will depend on programmatic needs and can change from semester to semester.Courses will be taught in person and online in the natural resources undergraduate and graduate programs and in partnership with the BS-GIST undergraduate program. The BS-GIST undergraduate program began in 2015 and saw its first students graduate in 2018; it is one of the fastest growing online undergraduate majors at UArizona. Successful applicants will teach across these programs.SNRE has strong research, teaching, and outreach programs in wildlife and fisheries ecology; conservation biology; ecohydrology and watershed management; rangeland ecology, restoration, and management; global change ecology and management; and arid lands. SNRE is also host to multiple cooperators from both the federal (the USGS Arizona Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, the USGS Sonoran Desert Research Station, the National Park Service Desert Southwest Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit, the USGS Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center, the National Phenology Network) and state (Game and Fish Dept., Dept. of Transportation, Dept. of Environmental Quality) agencies. Duties & ResponsibilitiesDuties and Responsibilities:Teach 6 courses in an academic year online and in person. We are looking for a person that can regularly teach both undergraduate and graduate or combined courses such as:RNR 417: Fundamentals of GISRNR 418: Introduction to Spatial Analysis & ModelingRNR 419/519: Cartographic ModelingRNR 420/520: Advanced Geographic Information SystemsRNR 473/573: Spatial Analysis and ModelingGIST courses, open source, or other geospatial courses of interest to the candidateService activities will include refreshing online course content, advising students, ensuring course quality, evaluating student outcomes, overseeing final program projects, and program administration.Participate in School and University committees and actively engage with the community and relevant professional organizations.About the University of Arizona:Diversity of thought, background, and experience powers our culture of innovation, success, and life-changing discovery. Minimum QualificationsCandidates should address each of the listed qualifications below in their application materials.PhD in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, or related field by time of appointment.
Preferred QualificationsCandidates with one or more of the qualifications listed below are encouraged to discuss relevant knowledge and experiences in their application materials.
Teaching experience, including online course delivery and flipped classrooms, at the university level in Natural resources and Environmental Sciences, Geography, GIST, Remote Sensing, or related field;Experience in development and teaching of traditional and online courses at the undergraduate and graduate university level;Experience and practice of improving diversity and inclusion in the classroom;Demonstrated excellence and interest in participant-centered learning (PCL) through scholarly publications, presentations, and workshops; andPrior administrative experience in undergraduate degree programs.
