Södertörn University welcomes applications for a doctoral studentship in Environmental Science as part of a research project focusing on stakeholder engagement for sustainable restoration of wetlands in the Nordic region. Doctoral education at the Department of Environment, Development and Sustainability Studies is part of the research area of Environmental Studies, which is a broad interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, dynamic and active research area that examines human interaction with nature and ecological processes. It covers the study of ecological, climatic and other natural processes that affect ecosystems over space and time, human-induced environmental problems, and environmental policy, governance and sustainability challenges. Knowledge in both natural and social sciences is necessary for the understanding of environmental and more broadly, sustainability challenges. The research project funding this doctoral position is called “Stakeholder engagement and sustainable restoration of wetlands for water security”. Its aim is to enhance knowledge of the problems and prospects for stakeholder engagement in the implementation of wetland restoration projects. The geographical focus lies on the Nordic region, where wetlands are being restored to improve water quality and quantity and other ecosystem services. A wetland restoration project involves multiple stakeholders with diverse interests; they need to be coordinated and involved throughout the different project phases to ensure the expected results. However, there is little research knowledge about how to achieve effective engagement among these stakeholders. This research project aims to fill the knowledge gap by comparing samples from ‘implemented’ and ‘non-implemented’ wetland restoration projects in Sweden and Denmark. The findings of this comparative study will lead to a holistic action framework for securing effective stakeholder engagement through the different phases of wetland restoration projects. Finally, this action framework will be applied to selected projects to develop stakeholder engagement strategies for improving water security. This research project is financed by the Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development (Formas) and located at the Department of Environment, Development and Sustainability Studies. Although the project focuses on both Sweden and Denmark, this doctoral position primarily concerns research to be conducted in Sweden.

Description of the doctoral position

This doctoral position in Environmental Science includes admission to third-cycle education, i.e. doctoral studies, and employment on a doctoral studentship. The successful applicant will write a thesis as part of the “Stakeholder engagement and sustainable restoration of wetlands for water security” research project. As a doctoral student, you will take doctoral courses, participate in research seminars, in national and international research activities and in the work of the project group. Your main task, however, is to conduct research and write a doctoral thesis. Supervisors will be assigned to guide you. During this period, the position is fully funded. The salary is subject to an annual increase in accordance with university regulations. The position may entail other departmental duties within education, research and/or administration, but these may be equivalent to no more than 20% of full-time. Entry requirements

The general entry requirements are:

1. a second-cycle qualification,
2. fulfilled requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or
3. substantially equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

The Faculty Board may permit an exemption from the general entry requirements for an individual applicant, if there are special grounds. (Ordinance 2010:1064)

Specific entry requirements

The specific entry requirements are fulfilled by a student who has passed courses worth at least 90 credits, including a degree project worth at least 15 credits at second-cycle level, within Environmental Science/Studies or a related subject that is of central importance to the research area. 

Assessment criteria

During the evaluation of an applicant’s eligibility, special emphasis will be placed on education in conducting social science-based environmental studies or practical experience of (net)working with stakeholders in the environmental sector, as well as relevant written academic work. Documented evidence from fieldwork, theoretical work, practical experiences, etc., in any specified area of relevance will be beneficial.

The basis for selection among the eligible applicants to third-cycle studies in Environmental Science is stated in the General Syllabus for third-cycle programmes in Environmental Science. When assessing the applicant’s submitted academic texts, research plan, and other documentation, special emphasis will be placed on:

  • independence and originality in the formulation and analysis of research problems
  • theoretical and methodological awareness
  • scientific maturity and critical attitude
  • documented skills in Swedish and English
  • relevance to the research project that the thesis will be part of
  • demonstrated ability to work within set time frames

 Admission and employment

This position includes admission to third-cycle education, i.e. research level, and employment on a doctoral studentship at the School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies at Södertörn University. The intended outcome for admitted students is a PhD. The programme covers 240 credits, which is the equivalent of four years of full-time study. The position may be extended by a maximum of one year due to the inclusion of departmental duties, i.e. education, research and/or administration (equivalent to no more illness or for service in the defence forces, an elected position in a trade union/student organisation, or parental leave. Provisions relating to employment on a doctoral studentship are in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.
