OPPORTUNITY:

The Surfrider Foundation is recruiting a Oregon Regional Manager to build the organizational capacity of our Oregon chapters through community-based environmental campaigns and programs, leading to an increase in activists and membership. This individual must have a background in direct action organizing and grassroots outreach. The successful applicant will work in a coordinated effort with Oregon’s Policy Manager & Oregon chapter network.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Coordinate the local and statewide program efforts of chapters within the region.
  • Assist in growing statewide membership.
  • Facilitate and train chapter volunteers in direct action organizing techniques including, but not limited to; campaign planning, recruitment, retention, strategy, tactics and program implementation.
  • Assist the Oregon chapter network in developing, implementing, and strengthening chapter programs such as Ocean Friendly Gardens, Blue Water Task Force, and Rise Above Plastics.
  • Represent Surfrider Foundation at local administrative hearings and public events when necessary.
  • In conjunction with the Surfrider staff develop and maintain positive relations with the regional funding community and timely reporting on grant deliverables and grant proposal development.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Director of Network Strategy and other PNW Surfrider staff to develop and facilitate statewide training conferences for the PNW chapter network.
  • Collaborate with the Oregon Policy Manager to promote statewide legislative campaigns and engage volunteers (throughout the chapter network) where appropriate.
  • Engage in outreach and consensus building with ocean stakeholders including: non-consumptive users, commercial and recreational fishermen, conservationists, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Oregon Policy Manager on relevant grant deliverables.
  • Communication Responsibilities include, but are not limited to; writing newsletter articles, supporting web content development, and social media outreach.
  • Administrative Responsibilities include, but are not limited to; lobbying activities reporting; financial reporting; and grant reporting.
  • Facilitate chapter governance and oversight, including but not limited to: chapter annual planning and reporting, executive and leadership training and cultivation and develop “chapter resources.”

Reports To: West Coast Regional Director

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • At least three years of experience in volunteer management and community engagement
  • Experience in direct action grassroots organizing and coalition building.
  • Knowledge of state, regional and national coastal & ocean environmental issues and management.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing equity and inclusiveness
  • Meeting facilitation to ensure conversations are focused, work is moved forward, and relationships are built, both in person and virtually
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with elected officials, agency staff, industry representatives and ocean stakeholders.
  • Ability to craft and hold big-picture vision for the Oregon region as well as execute on the daily details to help bring it to life
  • Well-developed strategic thinking and prioritization skills and ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously and autonomously
  • Experience in speaking publicly in front of a large number of people in diverse situations.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout Western Oregon.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours (including weekends and evenings).
  • Ability to work effectively from a home office.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability or willingness to learn how to use tech tools, platforms, and apps such as Salesforce, Hubspot, Golden, Google Drive and Basecamp.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Understanding of Oregon’s coastal land use system
  • Experience with media relations

SALARY & BENEFITS: 

This is a full-time position. Candidates will reside in, or be willing to relocate to Western Oregon. The Oregon Regional Manager will be paid a competitive salary commensurate with candidate’s experience level and geographic cost of living, starting at $60K. 

Benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage monthly premiums compensated 100% by Surfrider Foundation, Long-Term Disability insurance, Employee Assistance program (EAP), Section 125 Flexible Spending Account (FSA), 401(k) plan offering a match of .50¢ of every dollar contributed by the employee up to a maximum of 4% of earnings (in other terms, a 2% employer match). Surfrider also provides paid holidays, vacation and sick time. We also provide 6 weeks of paid parental leave following the birth of an employee’s child or the placement of a child with an employee in connection with adoption or foster care.
