Job description

Water is essential for drinking, washing, recreation, industry and health. Our environment and economy depend on this precious resource.

The pressure on water resources from climate change and population growth means that managing water abstractions has never been more important.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual with good communication, and information management skills to support our role in managing Water Resources in Thames.

Supported by our Water Resource Specialist, you will help to protect and improve the quantity of water available for wildlife, people and future generations. You will do this by supporting workloads such as:

-Advising on water resource licence applications
-responding to requests for data and information
-supporting the Water Industry National Environment Programme (WINEP)
-contributing to drought planning and response
-supporting the technical requirements of the Water Framework Directive
-providing technical administrative support to other team members

Depending on your skills, interests, and team priorities, you may also can contribute to a wide variety of activities carried out within our team. Such as:

-water quality planning;
-river basin planning;
-catchment planning;
-managing and analysing data and evidence to inform business plans;

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

Integrated Environment Planning (IEP) is predominantly a water planning team with specialists in water resources, water quality and river basin planning.

Working with area operational teams, national policy makers and other stakeholders such as water companies, we produce the environmental plans that drive Thames area priorities.

Our diverse and friendly team of advisors are at the heart of environmental decision making, facilitating integrated actions to solve complex problems.

Experience/skills required

Good organisational skills/discipline and the ability to plan, track, deliver and evaluate work.

Experience of translating guidance and instructions into local delivery.

Able to work under own initiative and as part of a larger, cross-functional/multidisciplinary team

Able to support working groups and organise/facilitate effective meetings.

Good research/analysis skills, supporting an ability to make proportionate, evidence-based inferences/proposals from information.

Experience of gathering, maintaining and quality-assuring data/information.

Sensitive to the needs of the internal and external customers and able to deliver outcomes through these.

Ability to convey information to technical and non-technical audiences alike.

Knowledge and experience in one or more of these subject areas would be highly desirable: hydrology, water resource management, Geographical Information Systems;
