About your role:

The Intern will work closely with WRI India’s Water Resilience practice and AIWASI (Australia India Water Security Initiatives) Project stakeholders. “This internship position entails working with disadvantaged communities in Delhi and developing a community based or community supported solid waste management plan for these communities” . The internship role will involve significant time being spent in the informal settlement and therefore the ideal candidate should be well versed in colloquial spoken and written Hindi. The projects will include working with governments, professionals, civic groups and communities on solving solid waste management issues at the community scale which can be scaled-up in other contexts. You will consider issues of sustainable development, around socio-economic and environmental well-being of the people as basic approach to solve the problems. The selected candidate will report to the Manager/ Senior Program Associate- Water Resilience Practice.

The candidate should be passionate about solving solid waste management challenges and self-driven towards influencing positive changes in the real world. The candidate should have deep understanding of the local context of Delhi and should help in identifying impactful positive changes that need to be achieved in the context of current urbanization. The candidate should be hands-on in conducting surveys and analysis especially in informal settlements, prepare clearly written reports and communication material. The candidate should be energetic and agile, outcome-oriented, team player, willing to spend significant time in the informal settlement and be well versed in both spoken and written Hindi and be able to engage with diverse stakeholders.

How your day will unfold:

The successful candidate will handle a range of practice responsibilities. Some of the key responsibilities include:
• Conducting research, undertaking analysis and synthesize solutions towards project deliverables and on-site project implementation
• Working on Australia India Water Security Initiative (AIWASI).
• Data collection and primary survey on the existing solid waste collection systems or practice.
• Researching on urban solid waste management in informal settlements, route mapping of solid waste collection in the project sites
• Helping to draft short blogs, project reports, research reports, site assessment reports and any other relevant and appropriate deliverables with WRI and its project partners for implementation.

Qualifications and Requirements we seek:

• Pursuing or completed post-graduate degree in in Urban Planning, Urban Development, Economics, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Environmental Sciences, Urban Governance, Regional Planning, Civil/Environmental Engineering or a related field with educational experience in dealing with urban solid waste management.
• Fluency in Hindi is a must
• Colloquial understanding of municipal solid waste management issues in informal settlements in Delhi
• Strong analytical skills and experience in multi-criteria decision analysis
• Experience in undertaking fieldwork under challenging conditions. This may include community consultations and survey within urban informal settlements.
• Ability to work under demanding schedules and organize logistics around travel for work
• Willingness to travel for work to the project site on a regular basis and on short notice
• Interns should bring their laptop and manage internet connection (for basic communication.

Stipend: INR 25000 Per Month
Location: Delhi, India (Offline)
Duration: 2-6 months
