A bit about you…
Are you a committed hydroclimatologist?
Would you like to develop scientific research on past, present and future hydroclimatic extremes?
Would you thrive on the opportunity to become a recognised expert in UKCEH, nationally and internationally?
You will be contributing to a range of national and international science initiatives, including high-profile Research Council UK and National Capability projects.
You will also contribute to the delivery and improvement of operational systems such as the UK Hydrological Outlook and the UK Water Resources Portal. This is a rewarding opportunity to see our research translated into applied tools which have a positive impact on our society!
As well as leading on tasks within projects, you will supervise members of the science team.
Main Responsibilities
Analysis and research focus:
- Future projections of hydrological extremes using large ensembles, including advancing work on storylines in projects such as CANARI and CS-NOW
- Improve and enhance multi-model hydrological forecasts delivered in the UK Hydrological Outlook and international WMO HydroSOS initiative
- Advancing work on hydrological variability including historical trends, drivers of variability and drought characteristics
Plus
- Participating in the production and delivery of operational services within the National Hydrological Monitoring Programme and the UK Hydrological Outlook
- Developing analysis methods and computer codes, ensuring good data management practices of large datasets
- Development of new proposals on emerging and relevant topics
- Contribute to technical reports and scientific papers, leading where appropriate
- Outreach and communication to scientific community, stakeholders and non-scientific audiences
Here are some essentials we are looking for:
- Either a PhD in scientific discipline or a Master’s with relevant experience, and a Second Class Honours degree or higher in earth/environmental sciences, geography, physical sciences or statistics/mathematics
- Proven numeracy skills or statistical analysis in meteorology/climatology or hydrology
- Experience of programming (preferably Python or R)
- A collaborative and inclusive team member, with the ability to develop effective relationships across the organisation and with international project partners
- Good organisational and time management skills, with an ability to work independently and to deadlines
We would be delighted if you also had the following skills/experience:
- Experience of using large datasets would be an advantage, including remote sensing data
- Knowledge and experience in the use of one or various of the following would be an advantage: Linux OS, GIS system, HPC and/or Machine Learning techniques
