Role

Are you an experienced hydrotechnical or geotechnical engineer with a passion for leading and managing infrastructure projects? If so, this exciting opportunity to join the Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation team as a Manager of the Water Projects Management Team might be perfect for you!

In this role, you will report to the head of Infrastructure Technical Services and be responsible for a team of 6 professionals in the Water Projects Management Team. You will provide technical leadership and management for the rehabilitation of Alberta’s water management infrastructure, which includes dams, canals, headworks, weirs, pump stations, and drainage works.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish a unified team of professional engineers and technologists to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the Water Projects Management Team
  • Manage and coordinate the activities of the team for rehabilitation of Agriculture and Irrigation’s (AGI) water management infrastructure in partnership with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TRAN)
  • Coordinate technical support for maintenance and address deficiencies and non-conformances of the water management infrastructure
  • Manage projects, including technical studies and assessments performed by consultants, related to the safety of the water management infrastructure
  • Serve as Chair of the Water Capital Committee and provide technical leadership and coordination for the prioritization of water capital projects
  • Act as a liaison between AGI and TRAN for the implementation of water capital projects and represent AGI’s interests in capital project implementation meetings
  • Coordinate and report annually on the performance measures of the water management infrastructure and manage the annual submission for Capital Planning Process funding requests
  • Manage multidisciplinary investigations and assessments of the existing water management infrastructure and provide Albertans with appropriate water resource management
  • To succeed in this role, you must have extensive knowledge of water management infrastructure and a strong working relationship with Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch (WIOB) management and Operations staff. You must also have strong problem-solving skills, as much of AGI’s water management infrastructure is aging and in need of significant rehabilitation or replacement.

Qualifications

University degree in the fields of Civil Engineering, preferably geotechnical/ hydrotechnical, or in Geosciences and a minimum of ten (10) years of directly related experience is required. 

Additional requirements:

  • Professional membership with APEGA and/or from any other recognized provincial or territorial professional engineering association.
  • Experience in leading a team of professionals and engaging stakeholders 
  • Thorough knowledge and/or experience with the water management infrastructure 
  • A clear understanding of the operation, maintenance and rehabilitation requirements of the infrastructure.

  • A post graduate degree Equivalencies will be considered.

Salary

$3,394.66  to $4,631.75  bi-weekly: ($88,600 – $120,888 / year)

  • Monday to Friday (08:15 am-16:30 pm) 
  • Evening and weekend work is sometimes required
