JOB POSITION DESCRIPTION: Impacts of dam removal on carbon biogeochemistry in river networks
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB
- Job location: ICRA – Catalan Institute for Water Research, Girona (Spain)
- Number of positions available: 1
- Expected start: March 1st 2023
- Temporal Position. The position is for 21months (until 30/11/2024)
- Gross Annual Salary package: 20.000 to 23.999 (depending on experience and skills)
OFFER DESCRIPTION
Within the UNDAMMED project (The role of dam removal on the restoration of morpho-sedimentary equilibrium and carbon fluxes in river networks), funded by the TED2021 call of the Agencia Estatl de Investigación, in its WorkPackages 1, 2, 3 and 4, requires developing an empirical investigation to establish the effects of the demolition of dams on the remobilization of sediments from the stagnant water body, as well as on fluvial dynamics (changes in the morphology and mobility of the channel) upstream and downstream, and the remobilization of carbon buried in the sediment. We also want to develop a theoretical and empirical framework to establish the net effect of the demolition of dams on methane emissions from the river section directly affected by the demolition, from a situation of emissions from the dam to one without emissions after the action. The empirical framework will be tested in various dams that ACA intends to demolish during the years 2023 and 2024. The results of the project will offer not only management tools to anticipate actions related to the remobilization of sediments and its effects on the dynamics of the river, but will also offer tools to understand the role of dam removal on the decarbonization of the economy.
KEY DUTIES
The cadidate will be in charge of a sampling design to understand the sedimentary and carbon dynamics in the affected rivers before and after dam removal. This includes morphosedimentary analysis and measures of CO2 and CH4 emissions and carbon burial and remobilization from sediments. The candidate will also be in charge of the analysis of the results and the elaboration of resports and publications. If the candidate is interested, there is the possibility to apply for PhD grants associated to this project, in order to become a PhD student in the topic of biogeochemical impacts of dam removal after this contract is finalized.
