The Water Board Secretariat is a branch within Executive Council Officer providing professional, technical, and administrative support necessary for the proper conduct of the business of the Yukon Water Board.  The Secretariat supports the Board which is an independent administrative tribunal in making informed licensing decisions which provide for the conservation, development, and utilization of waters in a manner that provides for optimum benefit for all Canadians and for the residents of Yukon in particular.

The opportunity…

The Yukon Water Board Secretariat is inviting applications for this critical position on its team.  The Technical Advisor coordinates and integrates technical inputs from external resources and also provides internal technical review and recommendations to staff and members of the Board on type A and complex type B water license applications and plans. It is essential that the candidate be able to understand large and technologically complex projects.

  • Science or engineering degree (an advanced degree is preferred) in a water resource-related discipline, such as hydrology, water resource management, environmental chemistry, hydrogeology, aquatic ecology, geochemistry, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, or other discipline that is pertinent to the water license process;
  • experience completing technical analysis, preparing reports and making recommendations related to water resource management;
  • experience providing technical advice and conducting reviews for a wide range of projects in northern environments permitted through the water license process including quartz mining, municipal, hydro, bridge and culvert installations, industrial, oil and gas, and placer mining;
  • experience managing external specialized consultants including preparation of scope of work, procurement and contractor management; and
  • a membership with a professional association or eligible for registration with Engineers Yukon (EY) as a Professional Engineer is not required but is an asset.

Candidates who have education, training, and/or experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

Additional information

Conditions of employment: valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s licence, current registration or willing to register with a professional association

Job requirements: travel within Yukon.
