PostDoc position (80-100%, 2 years) on «Gaps within and between International and National Biodiversity Policy»

The postdoc project focuses on a policy synthesis and gap analysis related to the international – national policy interaction. Two new sets of guidelines to protect biological diversity have been produced internationally: the new global biodiversity framework intended to guide decision-makers released by the Secretariat of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2020 and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) rolling work programme up to 2030, which outlines priority topics and objectives for all member nations. These international biodiversity initiatives are crucial in guiding policy at national levels and thereby influencing local implementation of scientific knowledge on biodiversity. This postdoc project will analyze how effective the CBD process and IPBES framework have been internationally and nationally (in Switzerland and potentially also in other countries) in achieving their goals, and what are major reasons for deficits in implementation. The postdoc position is embedded in the Blue-Green Biodiversity Initiative of Eawag and WSL.

The successful candidate should have in-depth knowledge of different approaches and methods used in the policy or governance literatures. They should have a particular interest in governance and decision-making processes and the related interaction between national and international levels. They must hold a PhD in political science, public policy or a related social science discipline. Previous experience in survey design, stakeholder analysis, or data collection from documents and interviews is an asset. Good knowledge of German and English is required, knowledge of another national language is an advantage.

As part of the postdoc project, you will collect relevant data (document analysis, expert interviews, etc.), examine it using qualitative and / or quantitative approaches, and write scientific publications. The Postdoc will be sitting and working with other BGB Postdocs at Eawag. The position is fixed to a period of two years and preferably starts in spring 2023.
