The new hire will work as part of an NCAR/RAL team of scientists and engineers to support:
1) Collection, organization, and analysis of hydro-meteorological data from numerical models, satellites, radar, precipitation gauges, stream gauges, and other field instrumentation
2) Hydrologic forecast execution, verification, and optimization from hydro-meteorological and hydroclimate models
3) Create novel analysis and forecast products, such as water budget analyses, seasonal water supply forecasts, and/or flood inundation maps for hydrologic applications.

HOW YOU WILL MAKE AN IMPACT AT UCAR
Here is a brief outline of what one would expect to be responsible for in this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Conducts current and future-climate hydrometeorological analyses and hydroclimatic analyses using water and energy budget-based approaches and integrating a number of different observational datasets
- Performs basic hydrologic model experiments using the WRF-Hydro/National Water Model system to assess the impact of different meteorological forcing datasets and land surface characterization datasets on hydrologic simulation, prediction skill, and water availability assessments
- Collects and analyzes radar, satellite, disdrometer and in situ hydrometeorological surface station data for improving the characterization of precipitation phase (solid vs. liquid) and intensity in complex terrain
- Develops and/or assesses physically-based and statistically-based precipitation, temperature, humidity, wind, and incoming radiation downscaling methodologies as tools for preparing input data for hydrologic prediction models
- Presents research results with program sponsors at scientific conferences and meetings, and in reports and journal articles.

Education & Experience REQUIRED
- Ph.D. degree in atmospheric or hydrologic science or relevant engineering disciplines.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Knowledge and understanding of process-based hydrologic models and their use for water availability and flood impacts assessment
- Skills in written and oral communication of research results, including in an interdisciplinary context.
- Familiarity with some or all: NetCDF, Python, and high-performance computing.
- Ability to interact productively with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and software engineers.
- Ability to publish research results in peer-reviewed journals.
