What we’re looking for:
We are seeking a Quantitative Ecologist to contribute to and lead the modelling and analysis of data to support water resources management. This is an outstanding opportunity for a quantitative scientist to turn their skills into real impact on government and industry in Aotearoa – New Zealand. Specific projects may include analysis of time series, development and refinement of river flow-response models, modelling the response of communities and food webs to changes in water quality, and applications of decision science to facilitate decision making under deep uncertainty.
We are seeking a very positive team player, with highly developed written and verbal communication skills and a proactive, problem-solving attitude.
What you will bring:
To be successful in this position you will have a PhD in environmental science or statistics with well-developed computer programming skills (e.g., R, Matlab). You should have expertise in statistical analysis, simulation modelling, and the tidying and wrangling of large data sets. The successful applicant will have a sound knowledge of freshwater ecology and freshwater management issues, and a strong desire to apply their skills at the interface between science and environmental policy and management.
Preferred candidates will have experience in consulting services in aquatic science and management; and will be able to demonstrate how they have worked at the interface between research that generates data and then uses data to develop models.

The preferred location for this position is Ōtautahi/Christchurch, a revitalised city in the heart of Aotearoa New Zealand’s South Island. NIWA’s Christchurch office is situated near Hagley Park, with easy access to public transport options as well as free parking for staff.
