The School of Natural Sciences, Technology and Environmental Studies has around 100 employees, who include teaching staff/researchers, doctoral students and administrative staff. Transdisciplinary activities are a priority for education and research, with researchers and students from varying subjects working together to make active contributions that strengthen multidisciplinarity. Environmental Science is a broad, multidisciplinary area that focuses on increasing understanding of fundamental natural processes, societal functions, sustainable development and how issues relating to the environment and development can be managed in practice. Research in Environmental Science at Södertörn University focuses on two integrated themes: (1) Environment and (2) Sustainability challenges and pathways. We are now welcoming applications for the position of associate senior lecturer in Environmental Science, specialising in climate and/or environmental change in the Baltic Sea region and/or Eastern Europe.

Job description
Associate senior lecturers are offered conditions conducive to obtaining the necessary research and teaching qualifications for promotion to senior lecturer. This position includes research at 70% of full time, and teaching and administration at 30% of full time. A halfway evaluation is performed to support and follow up the qualification process. As associate senior lecturer you must complete a course in higher education pedagogy worth at least 7.5 credits, if you have not previously done so. We are looking for a person who wants to build a future as a researcher and teacher of Environmental Science at Södertörn University, working in tune with the development of the subject and of society, in partnership with researchers in the Environment research theme. Research duties include conducting your own research, applications for research funding and active participation in the research environment, and the academic community/university. If you are offered the position, you will be expected to initiate and develop research that can reinforce the research currently being conducted with the Environment theme and which corresponds to the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary focus on the Baltic Sea region and/or Eastern Europe, which includes climate change, biodiversity, ecosystem functions, landscape processers and anthropogenic environmental impact. The proposed research much be able to be supported by existing infrastructure at the Department of Environment, Development and Sustainability Studies.

Educational duties may include teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels, supervision, course development and external collaboration. The position of associate senior lecturer in Environmental Science includes teaching on the interdisciplinary Environment and Development programme, and the Master’s programme in Environmental Science. Teaching Environmental Science may include elements of ecology, biology and/or geosciences that cover areas such as climate change, natural resource management, ecosystem services, biodiversity and sustainability and methods in GIS and statistics. Administrative duties are also included. Teaching is conducted in Swedish and English. The position requires active and collegial participation in the academic environment at Södertörn University. Employment as an associate senior lecturer may include collaboration with external parties in education and research.

Qualifications
You are qualified for employment as an associate senior lecturer in Environmental Science if you have been awarded a PhD in Environmental Science or equivalent subject in the natural sciences, such as geoscience, ecology or biology, or have the equivalent expertise, and can demonstrate teaching expertise in the field of Environmental Science or have the equivalent educational skills. Primary consideration should be given to someone who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise in the five years prior to the deadline for application for employment as an associate senior lecturer. However, in exceptional circumstances, someone who has been awarded a PhD or achieved the equivalent expertise at an earlier date may also be considered. Exceptional circumstances are sick leave, parental leave or other similar circumstances. For this position, you must have conducted research in the Baltic Sea region and/or Eastern Europe and be able to teach in Swedish and/or English. The applicant must otherwise have the personal skills necessary to do their job well and to represent the university in a way that benefits its activities.

Research expertise is demonstrated through scholarly publications in the relevant subject area, participation in research projects, research collaborations, receipt of external funding, and contributions to the development of the subject.

Teaching expertise is demonstrated through documented experience of teaching and a self-reflective approach to student learning and experience and your own role as a teacher.

Grounds for assessment
The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate senior lecturer are the levels of expertise required as qualification for employment. For this position, scholarly expertise is of more importance than teaching expertise. The following grounds for assessment have been established for this position (in order of importance). The below items must be documented.

  • Research expertise in the area of climate and environmental change.
  • Educational expertise in the areas listed under the heading Job description.
  • Experience of teaching in Swedish and English.
  • A thorough and feasible research plan that focuses on the Baltic Sea region and/or Eastern Europe. The applicant must append a description of their planned research, intended research partnerships, and any other activities relevant to the position. Max. 25,000 characters, including spaces.  The plan will be evaluated on the basis of its relevance to this position.
  • Expertise in interdisciplinary research and education.
  • Expertise in collaboration with the surrounding community.
  • Good cooperation skills.
  • Administrative skills.

Promotion to senior lecturer
A person who is employed as an associate senior lecturer must, after applying and at least six months prior to the end of their period of employment, be promoted to senior lecturer if they are qualified for such as position and fulfil the specific grounds for assessment that must be applied to promotions to senior lecturer. Such a promotion entails employment until further notice as a senior lecturer.

Specific grounds for assessment for promotion:
The specific assessment criteria must be ranked as follows. The below items must be documented.

  • Considerable progression in research and teaching expertise compared to when applying for the position of associate senior lecturer.
  • Expertise in initiating and independently conducting research of a high scholarly quality in Environmental Science focusing on climate and environmental change in the Baltic Sea region and Eastern Europe.
  • The ability to teach in Swedish and English.
  • Highly recommended teaching expertise from teaching at Bachelor’s and Master’s levels in Environmental Science or the equivalent. The applicants must display development in their teaching expertise, in both its quality and breadth, compared to when applying for the position of associate senior lecturer. The applicant must have completed a course in higher education pedagogy worth at least 7.5 credits and, through actual teaching and pedagogical self-reflection, demonstrate a reflective approach to their own teaching.
  • Demonstrated successful collegial participation in the teaching and research environment at Södertörn University and contributions to the subject’s development.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply for and receive research funding.
  • Demonstrated successful participation in the research community.
  • Expertise in interdisciplinary research and education.
  • Demonstrated successful external collaborations.
  • Good cooperation skills.
  • Administrative skills.

Employment
This position is full time and for a fixed term of six years. First date of employment as agreed.
