Background:
The Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations (FOCA; http://www.foca.on.ca) works in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks (MECP) to promote stewardship and the protection of Ontario’s water quality. FOCA is a non-profit, voluntary organization representing 500 Ontario cottagers’ associations plus individual and corporate supporters. For 50 years, FOCA has been dedicated to supporting the interests of Ontario’s waterfront property owners. This is accomplished by providing assistance and leadership to Ontario’s cottager associations, to individual members, and through advocating for the long-term interests of waterfront communities.
FOCA promotes sustainable waterfront communities by encouraging positive environmental stewardship, supporting strong community leadership, and through the promotion of fair and equitable public policy.
The Lake Partner Program is the largest lake water quality monitoring program in Canada which has over 600 volunteers sampling lakes and submitting samples and related observations through the MECP lab in Dorset.
Position description:
- Receive incoming Lake Partner Program and related water-quality samples, verify associated sample information, catalog, coordinate and submit samples to the water chemistry laboratory to ensure an organized and timely flow of samples.
- Prepare water quality sampling kits for Lake Partner Program volunteers.
- Promote lake stewardship through the creation of outreach and education materials, LPP newsletters and other materials.
- Respond to questions from the public about the Lake Partner Program by phone or email
- Occasional attendance at public outreach events on evenings and weekends.
The work occurs in an office and laboratory setting, with regular hours (i.e., 36.25 hours per week). Some weekend or evening work may be involved, with compensating time off. The nature of our business is sample kit and data handling, water-chemistry data analysis and reporting, with significant amounts of time dedicated to member services, promoting lake stewardship, and public relations. This position requires proficiency in aquatic science communications.
1 year contract, with the possibility of renewal
Start date: February 6, 2023
Compensation: $800 / week; 36.25 hours/week
About you:
- The successful candidate will be well-organized, excel at administrative tasks and time-management, and have relevant skills and knowledge.
- Completion of post-secondary education in the field of environment, ecology, or limnology, or relevant work experience.
- General knowledge and understanding of lake ecology and the geography of Ontario.
- Proficiency in Microsoft software, including Word and Excel.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Experience working with volunteer or community groups.
- Work well as part of a team and independently.
The following are considered assets but are not necessary:
- Experience in science communication, database maintenance and/or R coding.
