We are looking for a highly motivated Engineer/Hydrologist to join our team of hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists, and engineers in the Northern California region. We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic team member with approximately 0-2 years of work experiencea passion for ecosystem restoration, and the desire to learn and grow.

Who You Are

You are a recent graduate with education and ideally some professional exposure to civil engineering analysis and calculations, application of hydraulic and hydrologic analysis and models in open channel systems, and/or the production of design plans, specifications, and cost estimates. Software experience with HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, ArcGIS, ACAD Civil 3D, and/or MATLAB is desirable.

You are interested in stream and/or wetland ecology, geomorphology, and hydrology and have some education, training, or work experience in one or more of these areas.  

You hold a Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering or Hydrology; EIT certification (or the ability to obtain it within one year), or you have a related degree and directly relevant qualifications. Two years of applicable work experience and/or a Master’s degree is desirable, but not required.

You are an effective team member with excellent oral and writing skills who can work independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment. You can communicate basic technical information clearly and concisely to individuals and small groups.

What You Will Do for ESA

Support design and analysis for ecosystem restoration, fish passage, flood & stormwater management in natural systems, and other water resources and civil engineering projects under direct supervision of a more senior engineer or hydrologist.

Assist in the preparation of engineering analyses, design plans, reports, permit applications, and other project documentation. Apply hydrologic and hydraulic models, GIS, and other tools to evaluate runoff and flow conditions and process precipitation, streamflow, sediment, land use, and other data. Have the opportunity to collect hydrographic, topographic, and related field data to support engineering analysis and design.

Consistently demonstrate your solid writing and attentive listening skills, contributing to complex environmental reports, and participating in meetings with ESA staff and with our clients.

Thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment and be able to balance multiple responsibilities and deadlines, while working on a team or independently.

You live near San Francisco, Sacramento, Oakland, San Jose, or Petaluma.

ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position the range is $67,732 – $98,212 or $76,637 – $111,124 annually based on our anticipated hiring locations as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by a number of factors including but not limited to an individual’s related experience, education, skills, and the city in which the applicant lives.
