PhD position in hydrological modelling

Eawag (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology)

Dübendorf, Switzerland 🇨🇭

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Department of System Analysis, Integrated Assessment and Modelling (Siam) is offering a

PhD position in hydrological modelling

This is a full time 4-years position within a bilateral project between Eawag and TU-Delft that aims at understanding why some river catchments are more sensitive to environmental change than others.

The specific objectives of this research are to (i) describe spatial differences in hydrological responses across Europe and quantitatively link them to underlying differences in processes to explain why seemingly similar river catchments respond differently, (ii) quantify spatial differences in the sensitivity of hydrological responses to environmental change and differences in temporal trends, and (iii) analyse spatial differences in the underlying process feedbacks which in some cases exacerbate and in other cases attenuate floods or droughts and which are mostly unaccounted for in hydrological models, but are essential to reliably predict the effect of environmental change on extreme events and seasonal water supply. The analysis will be based on a combination of hydrological data analysis and controlled comparison of hydrological models.

The research requires a solid mathematical background, ability of programming and conceptualization. Graduates in Engineering with experience in hydrology and excellent track record are particularly welcome to apply.

Eawag is a modern employer and offers an excellent working environment where staff can contribute their strengths, experience and ways of thinking. We promote gender equality and are committed to staff diversity and inclusion. The compatibility of career and family is of central importance to us.
