PhD: IoT enabled Smart Systems for Flood Management

One of the most important environmental challenges is flooding, and this is a challenge which will be exacerbated by climate change. More efforts are required to work with communities to enable suitable solutions for flood management and resilience. Recent advances in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI), big data and internet of things (IoT) have increased our capability to monitor /collect the requirements to design resilient and sustainable solutions for flood resilience.

This project will work together with communities to drive innovation in integrated water management system using IoT for flood resilience. It will involve sensing, monitoring, and data collection, to assist with design and validation of innovative solutions and to develop a sustainable sensing and monitoring system.

A prospective PhD student will be required to have good programming skills, knowledge in embedded systems, experience in working with databases and cloud systems and good report writing skills.

This project is part of the Flood and Coastal Resilience Innovation Programme funded by the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs.


Funding eligibility

This fully funded PhD Studentship covers tuition fees for the period of a full-time PhD registration of up to four years and provides an annual tax-free stipend of ÂŁ17,668 for three years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a good honours degree (2:1 or above) in a relevant discipline. A masters level qualification in a relevant discipline is desirable, but not essential, as well as a demonstrable understanding of the research area. Further details of the expected background may appear in the specific project details. International students will be subject to the standard entry criteria relating to English language ability, ATAS clearance and, when relevant, UK visa requirements and procedures.

Selection process

All applications received by the closing date will be considered. Successful applicants at the application stage will be shortlisted and contacted to arrange an interview. All interviews will be held online. Unsuccessful applicants will be contacted to confirm that the application will not be progressed. After interview, all interviewed applicants will be contacted to inform them of the outcome. Successful applicants progressing to an offer of a place, to commence in March or May 2023.
