The International Hydropower Association (IHA) is a non-profit international membership organisation committed to advancing the role sustainable hydropower to address climate change. We build and share knowledge on hydropower’s role in addressing climate change, the clean energy transition and freshwater management. Our work involves international advocacy, research and policy initiatives and championing good practices.
Job description
As Congress intern, you will play a key role in the success of the World Hydropower Congress taking place in late October/early November 2023. This high-level event will bring together leaders, experts and innovators from government, industry, the United Nations, finance and civil society. You will report to the Senior Stakeholder Manager and work alongside the Communications, Research and Policy, Sustainability, and Stakeholder Engagement teams.
This is an unparalleled opportunity to gain valuable experience in planning and executing a large-scale climate change event and a basic understanding of the main challenges and opportunities facing the industry and the growth of renewable energies.

The job will involve the following key tasks and responsibilities:
Key tasks:
- Support with the development and organisation of the programme, including communication with speakers.
- Assist with marketing of Congress. This includes providing content for invitations and helping to develop engaging and innovative email marketing to drive audience engagement and registrations for the Congress.
- Support with managing the registration system and delegate registrations as well as Congress mobile app.
- Assist with the preparation of briefings, minutes or follow-up messages as needed.
- Management of queries about Congress from the public, delegates, partners, sponsors and speakers.
- Update and carry out regular maintenance of the contact database and liaise with the Communications Team about updates to the Congress website.
- Assist with the production of regular progress reports for the IHA Board.
- Assist with the coordination of exhibition booths and language interpretation of sessions.
- Support liaising with Indonesian Professional Conference Organiser and other Indonesian key stakeholders.
- Support with staff travel arrangements and accommodation in Indonesia.
- Support colleagues with ad hoc research and admin tasks related to Congress.
- Provide in-person support onsite at the Congress as needed.
Essential skills and attributes:
- Event planning experience
- Degree-level education
- Excellent organisational, written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to produce reports in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel
- Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and perform under pressure
- Ability to adapt to a busy environment, managing and prioritising competing deadlines.
- Demonstrably entrepreneurial, taking initiative to address challenges and seize opportunities
Desirable skills and attributes:
- Experience in using a CRM system
- Good understanding of GDPR
- Interest in climate change, energy, water, engineering or sustainable development
- Experience working with high-level stakeholders
- Digital and social medial capabilities
- Previous experience working in a membership body or international organisation or events company
- Additional language(s), for example: Chinese, French, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish
