He angitūtanga: The opportunity

Auckland’s freshwater ecosystems, such as rivers, streams and lakes, are an integral part of what Aucklanders value in our region. Be at the forefront of helping sustainably manage these ecosystems for future generations!

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Freshwater Ecologist to join our Water Quality team in Auckland Council’s Research and Evaluation Unit (RIMU).  Our team is responsible for long-term monitoring and reporting on Auckland’s aquatic environments including lakes, rivers and streams, coastal and marine areas, and groundwater.

Working with our scientists and monitoring specialists, you will provide scientific leadership, data analyses and reporting for our river freshwater ecology programmes, which include a macroinvertebrate monitoring programme, a Stream Ecological Valuation programme and a recently established pilot Fish Monitoring Programme.  There is also a fieldwork component to this role, particularly during the summer season.

Play a key role in building evidence to support State of our Environment reporting and the identification of management interventions with a key focus on implementing requirements of the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. Work together with other council teams and a broad range of stakeholders including mana whenua, local boards and community groups. Utilise cross-council and broader networks to maintain best practice outcomes.

He kōrero mōu: About you

Having completed a post graduate degree or equivalent qualification, ideally a science degree with a focus on freshwater ecology, you have an in-depth understanding of freshwater ecology monitoring and functioning of freshwater ecosystems. You have the ability to provide robust technical review in this area and undertake data analyses (for example, using R) and reporting.  You are able to manipulate and interpret datasets and communicate results and scientific advice to a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

You are familiar with New Zealand’s regulatory framework for freshwater management and have established professional networks required to maintain or enhance this understanding.

We will value your excellent collaboration and inter-personal skills, as you will be working with council-wide teams to better inform decision makers and activities in our region. An understanding of State of our Environment monitoring programme design, and the need for multiple monitoring programmes to work synergistically, is desirable.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou: What we offer

In addition to our employee benefits, we offer you the opportunity to be part of our dynamic and supportive RIMU environment teams – a collective of highly skilled professionals who work flexibly, and who are passionate about the preservation and sustainable use of Auckland’s environment.  Joining RIMU is great for your career and professional profile as you will continue to develop strong networks across the council group and the environmental/resource management sector.
