The Ministry of Land, Water, and Resource Stewardship (LWRS) is accountable for integrated land and natural resource management, including objective settings for land and marine environments, effectively managing cumulative effects, and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.  This position is part of South Coast Region Resource Stewardship, in the Land Use Planning and Ecosystems Division of LWRS. 

The South Coast Region Resource Stewardship works with First Nations on collaborative stewardship of natural resources (particularly fish, wildlife, and ecosystems) and monitoring of cumulative effects. 

Section Head, Ecosystems provides supervision and professional oversight for a regional resource stewardship program including managing staff and financial resources, managing stakeholder relationships, applying legislation, policies and professional standards in a consistent manner, participating in provincial policy development, and overseeing program delivery and professional projects.

Job Requirements:

In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education, experience and professional designation requirement as outlined below:
 

Education & Qualifications:

  • Degree in biological sciences or equivalent.
  • Registered (or immediately eligible*) as a Registered Professional Biologist (RP Bio) in B.C. with the College of Applied Biology within six months of employment.
    *Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a Professional Biologist (RP Bio) with the College of Applied Biology within 6 months of appointment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be confirmed. Please include your registration number with the College of Applied Biology (CAB) within your application, as you must be registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) with CAB. If you are not yet registered with the CAB, please explain how you are immediately eligible (i.e. currently a Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) member in good standing in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to the CAB).

Experience:

  • Experience interpreting and applying environmental management legislation and policy.
  • Experience leading staff on projects or program delivery.
  • Experience negotiating agreements with other levels of government or First Nations.

Preference may be given to applicants with 1 or more of the following: 

  • Experience collaborating and/or consulting with First Nations on natural resource management issues.
  • Comprehensive experience leading, planning, assessing, and managing fish & wildlife populations and their habitats, particularly for species at risk in the South Coast of B.C.  
  • Experience supervising, leading, coaching, and mentoring professional staff in resource management.  

Willingness/proviso statements:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid British Columbia Class 5 driver’s licence.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada
  • Willingness to meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
