Graduate Research Assistantship positions (PhD and MS) for NSF and USGS funded projects on flow and transport modeling
The Desert Research Institute (DRI; www.dri.edu) in Reno, NV, in partnership with the Graduate Program of Hydrologic Sciences (GPHS; www.hydro.unr.edu) at the University of Nevada Reno (UNR), invite applications for graduate studies beginning in Fall of 2022.The student will do his/her research at DRI, but coursework, academic advisement, and degree will be provided through UNR.
We seek highly motivated individuals with strong quantitative skills to contribute to: 1) an NSF funded project on flow and transport modeling in fracture networks using quantum computing and genetic algorithms; and 2) a USGS funded project to study transport of enteric viruses in groundwater reclamation systems. The first is a collaborative project between DRI, UNR, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The second is a collaborative project between DRI and UNR.
Required Qualifications
- To be eligible for an assistantship, students must be admitted to the Hydrologic Sciences graduate program and be in good academic standing at the University of Nevada, Reno. The student must have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 and must be continuously enrolled in at least 6 graduate level credits throughout the duration of the assistantship.

- Excellent oral and written English communication skills
- Interest in interdisciplinary research
Conditions of Employment
- All positions are contingent upon available funding from your DRI advisor’s research projects and may be terminated for lack of funding or performance.
- Due to the current health and safety emergency declaration, anyone hired must receive a complete (and verified) COVID-19 vaccination series or an approved medical or religious waiver request as a term and condition of employment prior to any start date at any Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) institution.
Compensation/Benefits
DRI offers a competitive support package, which includes a monthly stipend of $1750 for MS students and $1950 for PhD students and access to student health services. A grant-in-aid waiver covers a portion of tuition/per credit costs. Assistantships are 20 hours a week.
