Position Summary | The Department of Environmental and Sustainability Studies invites applications for a full-time visiting assistant professor position beginning in the fall of 2023. This is a two-year position with the potential to be renewed. We seek a person with broad interests and versatility in the earth and environmental sciences and a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching in a liberal arts institution. Guilford College, founded by the Society of Friends, emphasizes student-centered learning and interdisciplinary study; thus the successful candidate will collaborate well with undergraduates, enjoy interdisciplinary teaching, and be willing to work with faculty and students in other fields. The Department of Environmental and Sustainability Studies is a growing department focused on the relationship between human beings and the non-human environment, food systems, and environmental justice. We integrate approaches from the natural sciences, social sciences, and other academic areas. The college has a significant rock and fossil collection, a dedicated student research lab with fume hood and instrumentation, and extensive field and lab equipment and teaching tools. The successful candidate will be an earth scientist able to teach an introductory Environmental Science course, an introductory earth science course for non-majors, and several of the following courses: -Climate Change and/or Carbon Cycles -Hydrology (or Water Resources)Soil Science -Energy and the EnvironmentAtmospheric Science Duties and Responsibilities: -Teach a full load of courses in fall and spring semesters. This is normally three courses per semester. Lab courses count as one and a half course. -Support departmental projects and activities -Assist students in education and research Minimum Qualifications: -Ph.D. or ABD in one of the earth sciences or a closely related environmental science -Ability to teach introductory and advanced courses and labs **Required documents to be uploaded to “other requested documents”: – three references – teaching philosophy Review of applications will begin January 16, 2023.
