Clean Border Water Now Campaign Manager
The Surfrider Foundation is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world’s oceans, waves and beaches for all people through a powerful activist network. We are currently seeking a Campaign Manager to lead the Clean Border Water Now campaign (CBWN) in collaboration with Surfrider San Diego and the Legal and Clean Water teams at Surfrider’s national headquarters. The goal of the CBWN campaign is to eliminate the flow of untreated sewage, chemicals, plastic pollution and trash into the Pacific Ocean and onto San Diego county beaches through the Tijuana River Valley and up the coast from Baja California.
Campaign Manager Responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of the CBWN campaign including: policy analysis & development, litigation support, advocacy, public outreach and communications, coalition building, reporting and other administrative tasks.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Policy analysis, development & advocacy:
- Coordinate campaign planning & lead implementation for the CBWN campaign
- Analyze & review relevant federal, state & local legislation, policies and programs in coordination with SFHQ’s Legal Department
- Develop policy solutions and campaign priorities in coordination with CBWN committee members to eliminate cross-border pollution.
- Develop campaign tactics for CBWN committee members, chapter members and general public to support policy solutions.
- Conduct targeted advocacy to local, state & federal leaders
- Provide policy analysis for other Southern California water quality issues as time allows
- Serve as a factual and policy expert to SFHQ’s legal team, including Surfrider’s Legal Director.
- Provide updates and oversee communications between the San Diego Chapter and the legal team for active litigation, in close coordination with Surfrider Foundation Legal Director.
Support and maintain coalitions and community partnerships:
- Communicate and coordinate on campaign-relevant issues with government officials, other NGOs, community groups and businesses on both sides of the border.
- Attend policy related meetings, including those hosted by the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) and the Tijuana River Valley Recovery Team, and advocate for CBWN’s mission.
- Provide guidance to other staff on engaging more diverse communities in regional campaigns.
Conduct education & outreach targeting the general public, youth, and businesses on both sides of the border.
- Provide training, support and guidance for implementation of educational and outreach activities by CBWN committee members.
- Contribute blog posts and other content for Surfrider communication channels on the border pollution issue and CBWN campaign.
- Serve as a Surfrider media spokesperson on issue.
Administrative & Reporting
- Ensure tasks in the Stop Sewage Pollution/Clean Water Initiative: 2020-2023 and other grant deliverables are met.
- Participate in Clean Border Water Now Committee meetings and Surfrider San Diego County Chapter Executive Committee monthly meetings and provide campaign updates.
- Support campaign fundraising efforts through development of fundraising proposals in collaboration with other Surfrider staff.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements:
- Strong interpersonal skills to maintain positive working relationships with agency & community partners
- Spanish fluency
- Minimum 4 year degree and 3 years of experience working in environmental policy, law and/or advocacy.
- Knowledge of water quality issues and related legal and regulatory protections
- Proven ability to effectively manage multiple, complex tasks and to establish and regularly evaluate priorities.
- Experience communicating, both orally and in writing, with agency staff, elected officials, stakeholders and the public.
- Reside in San Diego County with a strong preference for S. or Central County
SALARY & BENEFITS:
This is a full-time position. The Clean Border Water Now Campaign Manager position will be compensated with a competitive salary commensurate with the candidate’s experience level, starting at $50,000+. The Surfrider Foundation offers a salary that is competitive with other national, not-for-profit conservation organizations.
