The Papua New Guinea University of Technology is located in the industrial city of Lae, the second largest city in Papua New Guinea. The city of Lae has an airport with flights to any location in PNG. The University is the only technological university in the country. It has a main campus and three amalgamated colleges. The main campus has 14 academic departments including one in Open and Distance Learning, a Satellite campus and two External colleges. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in engineering, natural and applied sciences, built environment, language and business. The university has an Information Technology Services department and a Library.

Department of Civil Engineering

The department offers a four-year undergraduate degree program, a two-year postgraduate program either by coursework or research and PhD programs. The postgraduate programs offered by course work in the department are Master of Civil Engineering and Master of Science in Solid Waste & Resource Management.

Lecturer II/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor

The Department of Civil Engineering seeks to fill academic positions in the areas of:

(i) Structural Engineering (1 Opening)

(ii) Earthquake Engineering(1 Opening)

(iii) Geotechnical Engineering (1 Opening)

(iv) Construction Engineering (1 Opening)

(v) Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering (1 Opening)

(vi) Transportation Engineering (1 Opening)

(vii) Environmental Engineering (1 Opening)

Preferred Qualification

For all the positions, bachelor degree in Civil Engineering and a postgraduate & PhD degree in any one of above-mentioned Civil Engineering specializations are required from a recognized university. Candidates are expected to have an excellent record of accomplishment in teaching, research, high quality publications and leadership of funded research projects. ​ Evidence of having guided postgraduate students is required.

Lecturer II (2 Openings) (CE0-007 & CE0-010)

Successful candidates will have a PhD degree and some teaching experience.

Senior Lecturer (3 Openings) (CE0-005, CE0-014, CE0-015)

Successful candidates will have at least 5 documented papers published in listed, peer reviewed journals and at least 5 years of full-time university teaching experience or equivalent industrial research experience.

Associate Professor (2 Openings) (CE0-003 & CE0-016)

Successful candidates will have at least 10 documented papers published in listed, peer reviewed journals and at least 10 years of full-time university teaching experience or equivalent industrial research experience.

Salary & Conditions of Service

Lecturer II

Base Salary Range: PGK49,960 – PGK61,064 per annum

Base IMA Range: PGK 65,141 – PGK78,313 per annum

Senior Lecturer

Base Salary Range: PGK60,453 – PGK73,888 per annum

Base IMA Range: PGK76,200 – PGK92,729 per annum

Associate Professor

Base Salary Range: PGK73,918 – PGK90,343 per annum

Base IMA Range: PGK83,489 – PGK107,189 per annum

IMA = International Market Allowance

(Level of appointment depends upon qualification and experience)

Initial contract period is for three years. Benefits include a gratuity of 30% of salary in the first year, 35% in the second year and 40% in the third year (paid on a fortnightly basis), support for approved research, appointment and repatriation fares for yourself and dependents, book & equipment allowance of PGK1,000.00 per annum, settling-in/out allowance of PGK1,700.00 for single & PGK3,600.00 for accompanied person plus PGK200.00 for each of two authorized dependent children (under 19 years) on appointment and repatriation, six weeks paid leave per year, recreation leave fares for yourself, spouse & two authorized dependents after 18 months of service and education fares and assistance towards school fees for authorized dependents are available. Staff members are also permitted to earn from consultancy up to 50% of earnings annually. Consultancy projects need to be approved by the respective Head of Department and the Vice Chancellor’s office. Furnished accommodation is provided on campus. All earnings in PNG attract income tax, the tax rates are progressive and the maximum rate is 40%.
