Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Departments for Environmental Chemistry (Uchem) and for System Analysis, Modelling and Integrated Assessment (Siam)has a vacancy for a

Postdoctoral Researcher in water quality modelling

The position is part of a project funded by the Swiss Federal Office for The Environment (FOEN) entitled “Feasibility study for Evaluating the National Pesticide Action Plan (Machbarkeitsstudie Trendanalyse und räumliche Übertragbarkeit von Pestizid-Monitoringdaten)”. The project investigates the feasibility of quantifying reductions of pesticide pollution in Swiss streams triggered by the National Pesticide Action Plan. Specifically, it investigates how well temporal trends in pesticide concentration data series from established monitoring programs can be detected and how such trends can be extrapolated across the Swiss river network. The results from the project will be used to formulate guidelines for practitioners how to evaluate such data in the future. The project will adapt existing model tools to simulate existing pesticide data sets in Switzerland, to estimate predictive uncertainty and to derive practical recommendations for future data analysis.

The transdisciplinary project is led by Dr Christian Stamm (Uchem) in close collaboration with the other research partners of Siam (Dr Fabrizio Fenicia, Ruth Scheidegger) and the VSA Platform Water Quality (Tobias Doppler). The starting date is 1 January 2019 and the project duration will be 2.5 years.

We are looking for excellent candidates with a solid background in hydrological/water quality modelling and experience in uncertainty analysis. The candidates like to work in a highly interdisciplinary environment and are interested in contributing to science-based support for practice. Experiences with diffuse pollution from agricultural sources is an asset. Knowledge of German or French are an advantage but not necessary.

Eawag offers a unique research and working environment and is committed to promoting equal opportunities for women and men and to support the compatibility of family and work. Applications from women are especially welcome. For more information about Eawag and our work conditions please consult and
