Job description  

We are looking for a highly motivated water quality specialist to have a comprehensive understanding of the water quality situation in Thames, with a view of the risks and priorities.

Working closely with other teams and team members, you’ll help provide direction, support and leadership on technical water quality issues, to ensure we achieve the greatest environmental outcomes. Knowledge of water quality modelling and catchment based delivery would be an advantage.

You’ll be passionate about making a difference as well as being a great team worker, self-motivated and able to communicate effectively with a wide range of customers in different situations.

The role will include:

• Leading on technical water quality tasks including planning, tracking and coordinating delivery of water quality improvements, including the Water Industry’s National Environment Programme;
• Supporting other teams and team members on complex water quality technical issues;
• Building and maintaining relationships with others, including internal and external partners;
• Using data, modelling and technical knowledge to identify actions that bring environmental improvements; and
• Leading and providing specialist advice to working groups and projects; facilitating the resolution of complex or contentious issues.

The team  

The Integrated Planning Team (IEP) is part of the wider Environment Planning and Engagement department. You’ll join a fantastic team of environmental planners who focus on water quality, water resources, river basin planning, and integrated catchment planning activities. Working with operational teams, national colleagues and water companies, the team collates, analyses and shares data to produce environmental evidence that informs and drives area priorities and influences decisions on investments for environmental improvement.

Experience/skills required 

You’ll have a good understanding of the Environment Agency business and environmental activities, along with strong IT and communication skills. Ideally you’ll have a degree in an environmental subject and experience in water quality planning.

In addition to this, we are looking for someone with:
– Ability to demonstrate leadership across the Thames Area in a specialist technical area (water quality);
– Experience of translating policy and instructions into local delivery;
– Evidence of working in cross-functional teams to achieve results for the benefit of both the specific function/project and the wider organisation;
– Proven influencing and networking skills;
– Experience of using evidence and analysis to explore problems and propose effective solutions;
– Experience of using the GIS and planning tools is desirable;
– Experience of effectively prioritising and delivering work; and
– Ability to coach and mentor others to improve resilience within the environment planning community.

The team is based in the Environment Agency’s Thames Area; there will be a requirement for some travel to attend some meetings at locations in Thames Area, but location for the role is flexible.
