The Environmental Monitoring and Science Division (EMSD) is responsible for monitoring, evaluating and reporting on the condition of Alberta's environment. We also assess the effectiveness of environmental policy, legislation and regulations, and address priority environmental information needs identified by internal and external stakeholders. Our activities are guided by advice from two independent bodies: a Science Advisory Panel and an Indigenous Wisdom Advisory Panel. The Division consists of four branches: Environmental Monitoring and Observations; Indigenous Knowledge, Community Monitoring, and Citizen Science; Integrated Environmental Analytics and Predictions; and Science.
EMSD is looking for Watershed Scientists who will be responsible for contributing to, and leading, provincial projects related to understanding the condition of Alberta's aquatic ecosystems. These positions will specifically focus on providing leadership on a number of key projects related to understanding the effect of anthropogenic activities on the transport, transformations and fate of key chemical constituents in Alberta's watersheds, including as part of the Oil Sands Monitoring program.
As a successful candidate, you will deliver watershed, regional and provincial scale evaluation and reporting projects in support of Alberta's core surface water monitoring program and/or the Oil Sands Monitoring program. You will provide expertise in identifying the link between land use changes and water quality in Alberta's watersheds using novel statistical and tracing techniques with a focus on the transport and fate of contaminants in response to anthropogenic activities. You will be responsible for delivering evaluation and reporting products, which ensure the Government of Alberta receives scientific, credible and relevant information needed to responsibly manage Alberta's river systems in the face of increasing pressure from industrial development, growing population, climate change and other pressures.
You will contribute to all phases of watershed monitoring and research delivered by the Environmental Monitoring and Science Division, including:
-Design: Lead the development and continuous improvement of watershed research provincial monitoring programs that address major issues of concern to the Government of Alberta.
-Plan: Complete multi-year research and monitoring plans to assess the response of Alberta's surface water resources to multiple stressors.
-Deliver: Ensure the Division's monitoring and research projects are delivered in a safe and effective manner.
-Evaluate and Report: Complete scientifically credible environmental data evaluation and reporting that meet project plan commitments and legislated reporting requirements.
You will collaborate with staff in all four branches of the Division, and will oversee scientific work of Technologists in the Environmental Monitoring and Observations Branch who are responsible for field-based monitoring activities. You may contribute to external research teams, which may include professors at post-secondary institutions, graduate students, federal scientists and other scientists from external science organizations through their collaborations.
About Your Work Environment
In these roles, you will be working primarily in an office setting located in Edmonton or Calgary and will have frequent contact with ministry staff in regional offices, other government departments, and external stakeholders. Some travel will be required.
A PhD in aquatic geochemistry, sediment geochemistry, watershed hydrology or related field is required. The position requires a minimum of 2 years post-doctoral or equivalent work experience in the design and implementation of watershed science projects. In addition, applicants must have a demonstrated record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals commensurate with established peers with a similar level of experience (for example, an Assistant Professor at Canadian academic institutions)
The position requires extensive knowledge of the following areas:
-Watershed, aquatic and ecosystem science.
-Geochemical processes in river systems including the transport and fate of contaminants in response to hydroclimatic events and anthropogenic activities.
-Application of appropriate models or other means to predict local, regional, and cumulative impacts of a broad range of development and activities at play in Alberta.
-Alberta's surface water systems including key drivers of water quality with an emphasis on the relationship between land use/land cover changes and water quality in aquatic ecosystems.
-Advanced numerical analyses of large environmental data sets, including data from EMSD monitoring and/or research programs and relevant programs or studies performed by others in Alberta and elsewhere.
-New and emerging methods related to assessing the status of, and changes in, Alberta's surface water systems.
-Current and emerging provincial and national watershed issues.

$2,963.75 to $3,904.80 bi-weekly ($77,353 to $101,915 annually)
These temporary positions for 3 years. This competition may be used to fill future vacancies across the Government of Alberta, at equal or lower classification and salary.
Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification (Scientific 2 and salary range $2,775.64 to $3,638.48 bi-weekly ($72,444 to $94,964 annually).
