This hire would primarily be working on a NIH contract to perform wastewater surveillance of COVID-19 in underserved neighborhoods in Atlanta and across Georgia. This project represents a multi-disciplinary, systematic approach to take SARS-CoV-2 concentration and detection methods from the benchtop to community public health application, with a focus on the vulnerable, low-resource communities in greatest need of improved COVID surveillance, to determine infection burden and inform public health response and vaccine priorities. The overall goals of the project are to operationalize wastewater-based COVID surveillance and the use of this data for public health decision-making to control COVID transmission.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Under limited supervision, uses a basic knowledge of public health principles to develop strategies and implement study activities to support a NIH contract for wastewater surveillance of COVID-19 for underserved populations in Atlanta and Georgia  
  • Organizes sampling activities and coordinates logistics amongst key stakeholders 
  • Assists with hiring and supervising graduate students to collect wastewater samples
  • Stays abreast of wastewater surveillance updates in the literature and presented during webinars
  • May provide education, technical assistance, advocacy, public awareness, and research
  • May provide technical assistance to organizations to include presentations, web-based resources, strategies, and educational forums to share knowledge and experience gained through the wastewater surveillance activities
  • Assists with data collection and data analysis
  • Contributes to proposals, protocols, data analysis plans, reports, manuscripts, and presentation of findings
  • Collaborates with partners to coordinate logistics and determine goals to achieve specific objectives
  • Performs related responsibilities as required

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Assists in developing, administering and monitoring project related budgets
  • Coordinates logistical arrangements for related conferences, conventions or meetings
  • May assist in identifying funding resources and in developing funding strategies and initiatives
  • Develops and generates various operational and statistical reports
  • Represents and promotes the project at various speaking engagements
  • May write grants, reports, briefings, newsletters, promotional or other written material related to the project
  • Performs related responsibilities as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of related project management experience, or an equivalent combination of experience, education and training

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience collecting wastewater samples and managing sample collection activities
  • Strong organizational skills and experience coordinating with and managing a team
  • Ability to interact effectively in a multi-stakeholder environment
  • Experience with laboratory procedures and microbiological water quality testing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proven ability to work independently

NOTE: This position involves research project coordination and local (city and state) travel up to 25%.This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, with intent to return to an Emory University location in the future.  Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employees.
