The Institute of Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon hosts a number of highly motivated and experienced researchers in the broad field of coastal research. Our research focus lies on numerical modeling of coastal processes and interactions between different environmental compartments on regional and coastal scales. At Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon we develop numerical models with the aim to determine the past and current state of the environment and to identify the major drivers for future changes in the system.
We invite applications for a PhD position in the area of marine science and climate change. The PhD study is embedded into a large European project under the Horizon 2020 program DOORS and the Helmholtz “Research Capacity Building for healthy, productive and resilient Seas” Project. Through integrating Earth observations and models, knowledge-based information streams will be established for determining plausible future states of coastal ocean systems (e.g. for the North Sea and the Black Sea). The position is initially for 3 years.

The PhD candidate is expected to conduct research focused on modeling of the river-coast-ocean continuum. The focus is to assess, predict and inform on the impact of multiple climate change and human-induced stressors on coastal seas, build up the knowledge base for decision-support systems. A major goal is developing new knowledge on the functioning of the coastal ocean system. The work will also contribute to the knowledge base for reduction & mitigation of climate & human impacts and development of tools for direct implementation in an advanced operational coastal observing & modeling system.
- holding a Master (M.Sc.) or diploma degree (academic university degree) in physics, mathematics, physical oceanography, atmospheric sciences, environmental sciences, or related disciplines
- good skills in written and spoken English
- programming skills (e.g., experience with MATLAB, R, Fortran or Python)
- background in environmental modeling is advantageous
- creativity and independence
- ability to work and communicate within an international team of scientists from different disciplines

The Institute for Coastal Systems – Analysis and Modeling studies the dynamics of coastal systems as part of the Earth system and develops prediction methods and future scenarios for coastal systems. One focus of our research is the study of coastal ecosystems, which are subject to increasing pressure to change due to climate change, use of coastal environments, and other human drivers.
