Chemical Process Engineering (CPE) research unit of the Faculty of technology merges the disciplines of chemical process engineering and bioprocess engineering and is strongly focusing in its research on sustainable utilization of Nordic raw materials. The specific research areas of CPE are the chemical and biochemical conversion of biomass, novel products and processes in industrial water treatment ,and recovery/separation process synthesis and evaluation.
Description of the position
The Doctoral student position is open at the CPE research unit. The position includes research in the field of water and wastewater treatment. The work focuses on the development and testing of sustainable treatment methods capable to address the challenge of residual contaminants of emerging concern and antimicrobial resistance evolution in wastewaters. The doctoral student will mainly work in the “REWA, Reduction and assessment of antimicrobial resistance and emerging pollutants in natural-based water treatment systems” project, which is funded by the ERANet Cofund AquaticPollutants call.
The position is scheduled to be filled from October 2021 for four years. A six-month trial period will be effective at the beginning of the initial 4-year contract. The appointment aims at a PhD degree and the main task of the doctoral student is to pursue doctoral studies, which includes participation in research projects as well as postgraduate courses and writing scientific papers. The doctoral student will draft a postgraduate study and research plan guided by the supervisor once the work starts.
The candidate is expected to have a MSc degree (granted no later than 31st August 2021) in chemistry, chemical, process or environmental engineering, or material science or related fields. The candidate is expected to have good knowledge on water and wastewater treatment methods. Knowledge on organic chemistry and material characterization techniques are regarded as assets. The position requires fluent written and oral English skills and good communication skills.
Salary and benefits
The salary is in accordance with the university salary system (for teaching and research personnel, level 2). In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be paid for personal achievement and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50 % of the basic salary level for the post. The typical salary for a starting doctoral student is approx. 2,500 € per month. The employees will be insured by the university and provided occupational healthcare. Finland is known as a country with a high quality of life and good healthcare system.
