Responsibilities

  • Completes hydrologic investigations by planning, conducting, and reporting on interpretive or limited independent studies or contributing to larger studies.
  • Works on water issues whose solutions require an understanding of hydrology and one or more related disciplines such as hydraulics, geology, geochemistry, and the complexities of ground or surface water flow.
  • Provides technical data and professional advice on resource management and technical requirements.
  • Contributes to project proposals and develops work plans and protocols for water resource management or water rights decision-making.
  • Analyzes, prepares, develops, and publishes river volume and flood forecasts for river basins under a variety of hydrologic conditions.

Qualifications

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal Service; -OR- have completed at least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the physical or natural sciences, or engineering, or directly related field; -OR- have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate/graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Specialized Experience Requirements: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements – please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-09) of the position to be filled. Examples: Collects, interprets, analyzes, and evaluates hydrologic data; plans and performs hydrologic studies of moderately complex systems in accordance with applicable authorizations, policy, and regulatory requirements; uses comprehensive process or computer models to simulate hydrologic conditions and inform operations; or conducts evaluations of single-basin or moderately complex multi-basin environments investigating quantity and/or quality in adherence with management-based water resource policies.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Work regularly combines both office and field assignments. Field work requires physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, or recurring and considerable walking, stooping, bending, crouching, crawling, and climbing such as in regular and periodic construction activities and field inspections. May also include frequent lifting of moderately heavy items. Field assignments may also involve operating small watercraft, driving motor vehicles to work sites, some of which may be remote, and include overnight stays in remote locations.

Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks, discomforts, and unpleasantness such as: high noise levels, infectious materials, or toxic or irritating chemicals; infestation of dangerous animals, insects, or poisonous plants; or adverse weather conditions. The work may involve performing tasks in close proximity to rotating heavy mechanical or electrical machinery and may involve working within confined spaces for extensive periods of time. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and involves compliance with safety instructions and regulations.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you have a degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics.
