Job summary

You will undertake teaching activities to support the work of the Centre for Environmental Policy. You will be responsible for convening, teaching and learning activities in the MSc in Environmental Technology, with an emphasis on water or waste management, or related, in our natural science Options.

Our long-running course provides the highest standard of knowledge and skills developmentfor environmental and sustainability specialists. Through the course students acquire a diverse range of discipline-specific problem-solving frameworks for tackling contemporary environmental and sustainability issues. A major emphasis of the course is on the way that environments function and on the compatible tools, alternative technologies and policies for sustainable management.                                         

Students elect to study on specialist “Options” during the Spring term. Our natural sciences Options include Integrated Water Management (IWM) and Environmental Assessment and Management (EAM).

Duties and responsibilities

Teaching and Learning Support

  • To teach as a member of a teaching team within an established programme of study
  • To convene or co-convene an Option in the Natural Sciences pathway
  • To give lectures and seminars to Master’s students on the MSc Environmental Technology course
  • To develop teaching materials, methods and approaches, with guidance where appropriate
  • To engage in scholarship appropriate to your teaching
  • To encourage supportive learning environments
  • To contribute to the ongoing development of the MSc
  • To supervise the work of students, provide advice on study and help them with learning problems
  • To assess the work and progress of students using appropriate criteria and provide constructive feedback to students, including feedback on essays and course assessments.
  • To assist in the recruitment process
  • To act as academic tutor and run academic tutorials
  • To act as a personal tutor providing pastoral support to students.
  • To coordinate and supervise Masters theses

Career Development

  • Undertake a programme of training to develop expertise in education as necessary e.g. PG Certificate in University Learning and Teaching or equivalent.
  • Contribute to departmental publications (for example course guides, websites, newsletters etc.) when requested.
  • Undertake small research and evaluation projects and present work at meetings and in appropriate professional journals.

Administration and other activities

  • To undertake duties related to course administration, including organisation of teaching activities under direction, attendance records, financial matter, Health & Safety matters relating to teaching and student thesis projects

Essential requirements

  • A PhD (or equivalent) and interest in a topic related to water management or waste management.
  • Recent experience in teaching a relevant subject in a higher education institution
  • Proven ability and achievements in a broad range of teaching.
  • Specialist knowledge in the relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated knowledge of teaching methods and techniques within own area.
  • A demonstrable ability to teach effectively at MSc level in a variety of teaching situations.
  • Proven organisational skills and ability to plan ahead, set priorities, work effectively under pressure and complete tasks to agreed time and quality standards.
  • Adaptable, flexible and receptive to new ideas and approaches.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative as well as working as part of a larger team, providing help and assistance when required.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills, in order to communicate effectively both with staff and students, and be able to deal with difficult situations tactfully, and in a helpful manner, at all times.
  • Able to produce written reports in a professional and clear style, as and when required.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail in all matters.
  • Effective communication and problem solving skills.
