Climate change is reshaping human civilization. How we respond will determine the future of our species. Our food system, our economies, our cities and our communities — they’re all adapted to the climate we currently live in. But what if the climate changes too fast for us to keep up? The fate of the one and only planet we’ve ever called home is uncertain. It is in everyone’s interest to come together to address the challenges we face.
The Climate Change Science Fellow will directly support innovative and catalytic thought leadership contributing to the adaptation goal of CI’s climate change strategy. This fellowship will explore the extreme impacts of climate change (with an aim to addressing tipping points/limits to adaptation), and the range of ecosystem-based measures to minimize loss of livelihoods and ecosystem services in light of those impacts.
The fellowship addresses the new frontier of climate change, broadly addressing the range of climate change impacts for which climate change adaptation will not be viable. As global GHG emissions increase, the possibility of increasingly extreme climate change impacts becomes more probable, requiring more transformative adaptive management.
The Climate Change Adaptation Science Fellow will bring expertise on the impacts of climate change with a view to assessing the limits of adaptation (in general), the capacities (and limits) of ecosystems to serve as a vehicle for adaptation to the impacts of climate change, and the range of ecosystem-based solutions that can be utilized to mitigate these extreme and harmful impacts (as well as the points at which ecosystem-based solutions will no longer be viable).
This fellowship will address cross-sectoral issues and will aim to develop specific recommendations (policies or practices) to enhance resilience and sustainable development in a specific geography, country, or on a commodity. This process developed by the fellow should be replicable.

- Advanced degree or 5 years of field experience working on adaptation
Specific Duties Associated with the Position:
- Develop research project
- Implement research project
- Work both independently and as part of a team
- Interact and collaborate with MCS colleagues, the Climate Strategy Team, as well as colleagues from throughout CI
- Contribute to funding proposals as needed
- Generate research report documents including peer-reviewed paper
- Present research progress and findings to both internal and external audiences
- Participate in all Fellowship cohort activities
Travel associated with the position:
- Field visits as needed as part of a specific research project or field work required, as well as to institutional meetings and conferences.
- Fellowship cohort events, including CI training events and CI Board meetings.
At the successful completion of the 2-year Fellowship, the Fellow will have:
- Developed one peer-reviewed research paper and policy analysis identifying recommendations
- Explored 3-5 geographic/biological/social contexts relevant to CI in which climate change impacts are expected to be severe and critically evaluate them with a modest level of detail for at least 2

- Two representative articles by the candidate (optional);
- A brief (one-page) statement by the candidate describing his or her significant scientific work and reason for applying to be a Fellow.
